Question

UPSC Prelims 2017 Question:

Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) are used to create digital display in many devices. What are the advantages of OLED displays over Liquid Crystal displays?

  1. OLED displays can be fabricated on flexible plastic substrates.
  2. Roll-up displays embedded in clothing can be made using OLEDs.
  3. Transparent displays are possible using OLEDs.

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

  1. 1. 1 and 3 only
  2. 2. 2 only
  3. 3. 1, 2 and 3
  4. 4. None of the above statements is correct

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 3: 1, 2 and 3

Detailed Solution

Explanation:

  • Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) is a light-emitting diode containing thin flexible sheets of an organic electroluminescent material, used mainly in digital display screens. OLED displays can be fabricated on flexible plastic substrates, leading to the possible fabrication of flexible organic light-emitting diodes for other new applications, such as roll-up displays embedded in fabrics or clothing. If a substrate like polyethylene terephthalate (PET) can be used, the displays may be produced inexpensively. Furthermore, plastic substrates are shatter-resistant, unlike the glass displays used in LCD devices. So, statements 1 and 2 are correct.

  • OLEDs can be made flexible and transparent, with transparent displays being used in smartphones with optical fingerprint scanners and flexible displays being used in foldable smartphones. So, statement 3 is correct.

Therefore, option (3) is the correct answer.
