Around 1.3 million students took the UPSC Prelims exam in 2023. Out of them, 14,624 students were chosen for the Mains exam. UPSC conducts this exam each year to select candidates for important government positions like IPS, IAS, IFS, IRS, and others. The Prelims exam took place on May 28, 2023, and those who passed appeared for the Mains from 15 to 24 September, 2023. In 2022, a total of 11,35,697 students applied for the UPSC exam.
Usually, around 1 million students attempt the exam every year. However, only 0.2% of all candidates pass the exam. This article provides information about the number of students who appeared for the UPSC Civil Services exam in the last few years.
On May 28, 2023, about 13 lakh students took the UPSC Prelims exam at 79 centres across India. There were 1105 vacancies. Only 14624 students scored above the cut-off and can move on to the Mains round.
The Prelims is the first step in the recruitment process. Those who pass the Prelims exam can move on to the mains stage. In the next step, these candidates filled out the UPSC DAF form within a certain time frame. Around 13 lakh people took the exam, but only 14,624 made it to the next round. This shows how tough the exam is.
The UPSC Prelims result was declared on June 12th, 2023. Out of 13 lakh candidates, only 14624 candidates scored enough to move to the UPSC Mains.
These 14624 candidates filled out the DAF-1 form for UPSC Mains 2023. Most of them appeared for the mains exam from September 15th to 24th, 2023.
After the result, 2916 candidates were selected for the personality test in Dholpur House, New Delhi. This is about 0.22% of the initial 13 lakh candidates.

According to the recent trend analysis, the number of students appearing for UPSC every year has increased to approx 11 lakh to 13 lakh students every year.
Around 13 lakh students appeared for UPSC 2023 Examination. Out of these, only 14,600 students appeared for Mains 2023 and 2916 sat for the final round of the Personality Test.
The UPSC 2023 exam aims to fill around 1105 vacancies. Out of these, 37 vacancies are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disability:
