Operation Amistad is India’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) mission launched in June 2026 to assist Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter Scale caused widespread destruction. The operation reflects India’s commitment to providing timely humanitarian aid to countries affected by natural disasters and reinforces its image as a responsible global partner.
The word “Amistad” means “Friendship” in Spanish, symbolizing India’s solidarity and friendship with the people of Venezuela during a time of humanitarian crisis.
Unlike military operations, Operation Amistad is purely a humanitarian mission focused on saving lives, providing emergency medical care, and delivering essential relief supplies to disaster-affected communities.
Why Was Operation Amistad Launched?
In June 2026, Venezuela experienced two major earthquakes within a short span of time. The earthquakes caused extensive damage to homes, hospitals, roads, communication infrastructure, and public utilities. Thousands of people were injured, displaced, or left without access to basic necessities.
Recognizing the urgent humanitarian need, India launched Operation Amistad to provide immediate disaster relief and medical support.
Operation Amistad Objectives
The Operation Amistad was designed to provide comprehensive humanitarian support during the immediate aftermath of the disaster.
- Provide rapid humanitarian assistance to earthquake victims.
- Deliver emergency relief materials.
- Offer advanced medical treatment through Indian medical teams.
- Establish temporary field hospitals.
- Strengthen India-Venezuela humanitarian cooperation.
- Demonstrate India’s capability in overseas disaster response.
- Support recovery efforts until local systems stabilize.
BHISHM Cube Technology
One of the most innovative aspects of Operation Amistad was the deployment of BHISHM Cubes. BHISHM stands for Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita & Maitri. These are indigenously developed modular field hospitals that can be rapidly deployed in disaster zones.
Operation Amistad Significance
