- Punjab has claimed the first position in the NITI Aayog School Education Quality Index 2026, overtaking Kerala.
- Punjab showed a significant improvement in the reported ranking, moving from 27th position in 2020 to 1st position in 2026. The state also recorded 82% proficiency in Class III language skills and 78% proficiency in mathematics in the cited indicators.
- The achievement was highlighted by the state government as the result of improvements in school infrastructure, learning outcomes, foundational education and academic support.
- Punjab’s education reforms have focused on improving government schools through better facilities, digital learning, teacher support and targeted programmes.
- The state has also reported a major rise in the number of government-school students qualifying for competitive examinations such as NEET.
- According to the figures presented by the state government, 19,125 government schools have undergone infrastructure improvements, with around ₹2,638 crore spent on these works. Another ₹1,000 crore has reportedly been approved for further upgrades.
- The state has also introduced measures to improve the learning environment, including timely textbook distribution, smart classrooms and modern teaching methods. Textbooks are now reported to reach district headquarters by 15 February and schools by 31 March.
