India has launched its first indigenous, non-GMO, high-expansion Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Hybrid Seed, marking a step towards greater self-reliance in specialised agricultural technology. Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan launched India’s First Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Hybrid Seed at the Gourmet Popcornica facility in Musunuru, Eluru district, Andhra Pradesh.
What Is the Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Hybrid Seed?
The non-GMO popcorn maize hybrid seed is an indigenous hybrid developed for high-quality commercial popcorn production.
- It is indigenously developed, reducing dependence on imported hybrid seed technology.
- It is non-GMO, meaning its development does not involve genetic modification.
- Its high-expansion characteristic makes it suitable for commercial popcorn production.
- It can support domestic production as well as value-added popcorn exports.
Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Hybrid Seed Need
The non-GMO popcorn maize hybrid seed was launched primarily to reduce India’s dependence on imported hybrid seed technology for high-quality popcorn maize. Developing an indigenous alternative was necessary to strengthen domestic capability in specialised seed technology and ensure greater control over the production of quality popcorn maize.
India’s First Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Hybrid Seed Significance
The non-GMO popcorn maize hybrid seed is significant because it can strengthen the entire popcorn maize value chain, from seed development and cultivation to processing and marketing.
- Strengthens self-reliance: Indigenous development builds India’s own capability in specialised seed technology and reduces dependence on foreign technology.
- Benefits farmers: More than 17,500 farmers across eight States cultivating nearly 40,000 acres are already linked to the popcorn value chain, providing access to an organised market.
- Promotes value addition: Instead of limiting maize to primary cultivation, the seed supports a processing-based value chain in which maize can be converted into higher-value popcorn products.
- Creates export opportunities: Indigenous production and processing can help Indian enterprises supply popcorn products to international markets.
- Supports climate resilience: The development highlights the importance of breeding crop varieties that can perform better under drought, water stress and changing weather conditions.
- Encourages agricultural innovation: It demonstrates how indigenous technology, farmers and private enterprises can work together to develop specialised agricultural products.
Government Support
The Vice President highlighted several government initiatives that support farmers and promote technology-driven agriculture.
- Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN): Provides income support to eligible farmers.
- Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY): Provides crop insurance to protect farmers against specified risks.
- Kisan Credit Card (KCC): Provides access to institutional credit for agricultural activities.
- Namo Drone Didi: Promotes the use of drones in agriculture through women-led Self Help Groups.
The Vice President emphasised that such initiatives, along with modern technology and indigenous innovation, can make agriculture more productive, innovative and profitable.
India’s First Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Hybrid Seed Challenges
The Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Hybrid Seed may face challenges from changing weather conditions and water stress. Continued research will be needed to develop climate-resilient, drought-tolerant and water-efficient varieties. Its wider adoption will also require better irrigation facilities, access to modern technology and adequate processing and market infrastructure.
