India has signed an agreement with the United States to procure the Javelin anti-tank guided missile system for the Indian Army, marking an important development in India-US defence cooperation.

What Is the Javelin Missile System?

Javelin is a US-developed, man-portable anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) system designed mainly to destroy armoured targets.

• It entered service with the US military in 1996.
• It is a fire-and-forget weapon, meaning the missile guides itself after launch and the operator does not need to continuously guide it.
• It uses an infrared guidance system to identify and track the target.
• It can be carried and operated by individual soldiers and can also be integrated with suitable platforms.
• The system is produced by the Javelin Joint Venture of Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.

How Does the Javelin Missile System Work?

• The operator first uses the Command Launch Unit (CLU) to detect and lock onto the target. 
• Once the missile is launched, its infrared guidance system automatically guides it towards the target, allowing the operator to relocate rather than continuously guide the missile. 
• Javelin also uses a soft-launch mechanism. An initial motor pushes the missile out of the launch tube before the main flight motor ignites. This reduces the danger from exhaust and allows the weapon to be fired from relatively confined positions. 
• The missile has two principal attack modes:
  • Top-attack mode: The missile climbs and then dives onto the target from above, exploiting the relatively weaker armour on the roof of many armoured vehicles.
  • Direct-attack mode: The missile follows a more direct trajectory and is useful against targets such as fortifications and other positions
• The system uses a tandem warhead, designed to defeat modern armour, including explosive reactive armour.

Why Is Javelin Missile System Important for India?

The proposed acquisition can strengthen India’s infantry-level anti-armour capability while adding a combat-proven system to its military inventory.

• Anti-armour capability: It gives infantry units a portable weapon against tanks and other armoured vehicles.
• Fire-and-forget capability: Soldiers can relocate after firing instead of remaining exposed to guide the missile.
• Top-attack capability: It can exploit vulnerabilities in the upper armour of armoured vehicles.
