Snow Leopard Trekking in Ladakh Ranks 4th on Wildlife Experience Index

Snow leopard trekking in Ladakh has been ranked 4th globally in the Wildlife Experience Index released by travel company Bailey Robinson, scoring 85.5 out of 100. The ranking highlights Ladakh’s importance as a high-altitude habitat for the elusive “Ghost of the Mountains.”

The Wildlife Experience Index assessed 30 wildlife experiences using six criteria – rarity, remoteness, conservation importance, exclusivity, accessibility and encounter potential.

• Mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda/Uganda ranked first, followed by emperor penguin expeditions in Antarctica and saiga antelope trips in Kazakhstan.
• Snow leopard tracking in Ladakh ranked fourth with a score of 85.5/100.
• Eight of the top 10 experiences involve threatened species, highlighting the growing interest in wildlife experiences linked to rare species and conservation.

Snow Leopard Trekking in Ladakh

Snow leopard trekking in Ladakh is centred around the high-altitude valleys of Hemis National Park, particularly the Rumbak, Uley and Shang valleys.

• November to March is considered the prime period for tracking as prey such as bharal (blue sheep) and Asiatic ibex move towards lower valleys during winter, increasing the chances of spotting snow leopards.
• The landscape also supports Tibetan wolves, red foxes and lynx, making it an important high-altitude wildlife habitat.

Snow Leopard and Its Conservation

The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is a high-altitude predator found across the mountains of Central and South Asia, including the Himalayan and Trans-Himalayan regions of India.

• Distribution in India: Found mainly in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, in rugged high-altitude habitats.
• Ecological role: As a top predator, it regulates prey populations and helps maintain the ecological balance of mountain ecosystems.
• Key adaptations: Thick fur, broad furry paws, a long tail and specialised respiratory features help it survive cold, rocky and oxygen-deficient high-altitude environments.
• Behaviour: It is largely solitary and elusive, with individuals occupying large home ranges and using scent marking for communication.
• Diet: It mainly feeds on wild ungulates such as bharal and ibex, along with smaller mammals such as marmots, pikas and hares.
• Population in India: The Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) estimated 718 snow leopards in the country, with the highest population in Ladakh (477). The assessment covered around 1.2 lakh sq. km of potential snow leopard habitat using field surveys, camera traps and occupancy-based methods.
• Conservation status: The snow leopard is Vulnerable under the IUCN Red List, listed in Appendix I of CITESand placed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 in India.
• Major threats: Habitat degradation, declining natural prey, poaching, climate change, infrastructure development and human–wildlife conflict threaten its survival.
• Conservation efforts: Project Snow Leopard, the Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI), SECURE Himalaya and community-based measures such as predator-proof livestock corrals and compensation schemes support its conservation.
