- School enrolment: UDISE+ recorded 24.72 crore students from pre primary to higher secondary levels, supported by approximately 1.02 crore teachers.

- Nutrition: More than half of India’s children have been reported as malnourished, while adolescent girls face particularly high risks of undernutrition.

- Climate vulnerability: A UNICEF report released on 16 June 2026 estimates that 411.62 million children face at least two climate or disaster hazards.
- Multiple hazards: More than 234 million children face at least three climate hazards, while drought and extreme heat affect over 158.8 million children together.
Challenges Faced by Children in India:
- Child protection: The Right to Education Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act remain important legal frameworks for safeguarding children.
- Child budget: The Union Budget allocated ₹1,32,296.85 crore for child welfare and development schemes, reflecting continued public investment in children.
- Digital concerns: Increasing digital, gaming and social media dependence among young people has raised concerns about behavioural health and responsible technology use.
- Persistent challenges: Rural children, urban poor families, Scheduled Castes, tribal communities and other disadvantaged groups continue facing poverty, malnutrition, child marriage, poor attendance and inadequate sanitation.
- Child marriage: India ranks fourth among eight South Asian countries for child marriage prevalence, after Bangladesh, Nepal and Afghanistan, with adolescent girls particularly vulnerable.
Way Forward:
- Stronger social protection, quality education, effective legal enforcement, rehabilitation, disaster preparedness and child centred climate adaptation remain essential for securing children’s rights.
- The Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation and organisations such as BBA continue supporting child protection, awareness, rehabilitation and policy advocacy against exploitation.
