When is World Environmental Health Day 2026?

World Environmental Health Day is observed on 26 September every year. The day is led internationally by the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) and brings attention to the role of environmental health in preventing disease and protecting communities. In 2026, the day will be observed on 26 September 2026 and marks the 16th observance since the day was established in 2011.

The official theme for World Environmental Health Day 2026 is: “Environmental Health: Standing with Science to Protect Communities”

History and Background of World Environmental Health Day

World Environmental Health Day was launched by the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH Council) in Indonesia in 2011.

• The IFEH Council meeting was held in Bali, Indonesia, from 24 to 26 September 2011.
• On 26 September 2011, the IFEH proclaimed the day as World Environmental Health Day.
• The first observance was held on 26 September 2011.

Since then, World Environmental Health Day has provided an international platform for environmental health professionals, institutions and communities to highlight different environmental risks and their health consequences.

Significance of World Environmental Health Day

World Environmental Health Day brings attention to the direct link between environmental conditions and human health. Its significance lies in highlighting major environmental health challenges and encouraging science-based action to protect communities.

• Highlights the health burden of air pollution: The day draws attention to the health consequences of both ambient and household air pollution, which are associated with around 7 million premature deaths every year.
• Promotes safe water, sanitation and hygiene: It highlights the importance of access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene in preventing infectious diseases and protecting vulnerable communities.
• Strengthens awareness of food safety: The day draws attention to the risks posed by contaminated food and the need for effective monitoring, hygiene standards and regulatory enforcement.
