Ahmedabad in Gujarat is known as the “Manchester of India” because of its historical importance as a major cotton textile centre. The growth of textile mills transformed Ahmedabad into an important industrial city and connected its history with labour movements, Swadeshi and Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha.

Historical Basis of the Manchester of India

Ahmedabad’s rise as the Manchester of India was supported by its location in a cotton-growing region, availability of local capital, entrepreneurial activity, labour and established trade networks.

  • Ranchhodlal Chhotalal established the first cotton textile mill in Ahmedabad in 1861.
  • The Ahmedabad Mill Owners’ Association was established in 1891, reflecting the growing importance of the textile industry.
  • Ahmedabad had more than 60 textile mills by the 1950s.
  • The disruption of British textile imports during the First World War provided additional opportunities for Indian textile mills.

Factors Behind the Manchester of India

The development of Ahmedabad as the Manchester of India was supported by several industrial-location factors:

  • Raw cotton was readily available from Gujarat and neighbouring cotton-producing regions.
  • Local capital from established merchant and business communities supported investment in textile mills.
  • Entrepreneurship encouraged the expansion of modern textile manufacturing.
  • Labour availability supported the growth of a large industrial workforce.
  • Markets and trade networks connected Ahmedabad’s textile products with consumers in Gujarat and other parts of India.
  • Transport facilities helped move raw cotton to mills and finished textiles to markets.
  • Growing domestic demand supported the expansion of textile production.

Manchester of India and the Labour Movement

The expansion of textile mills created a large workforce and also led to disputes over wages and working conditions.

  • Anasuya Sarabhai played an important role in organising Ahmedabad’s textile workers.
  • The Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association, also known as the Majoor Mahajan Sangh, became an important organisation representing textile workers.
  • Ahmedabad therefore became an important centre of organised labour and industrial dispute resolution.

Ahmedabad Mill Strike of 1918

The Ahmedabad Mill Strike of 1918 was a dispute between textile workers and mill owners over wages.

  • Mahatma Gandhi supported the workers and used Satyagraha and non-violence during the dispute.
  • Gandhi undertook a fast and urged workers to maintain discipline.
  • The dispute was eventually settled, making it an important example of applying Satyagraha to a labour dispute.

Manchester of India, Swadeshi and National Movement

Ahmedabad’s textile industry also became closely connected with the economic dimension of Indian nationalism.

  • The Swadeshi movement encouraged the use of indigenous goods and reduced dependence on imported British textiles.
  • Mahatma Gandhi promoted khadi, spinning and Swadeshi as instruments of economic self-reliance and national mobilisation.
  • Gandhi established the Kochrab Ashram in 1915 and later the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad.

Thus, the history of the Manchester of India is connected not only with industrialisation but also with the economic aspects of the freedom struggle.

Decline of Traditional Textile Mills

Ahmedabad’s traditional textile mills declined significantly during the later 20th century.

  • Outdated machinery and low productivity reduced the competitiveness of older mills.
  • Competition from modern textile units and other textile centres increased.
  • Rising costs and labour disputes affected several mills.
  • Technological and structural changes weakened the traditional large-scale mill model.
  • Mill closures resulted in significant employment losses and social disruption.

An Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad study recorded that around 50,000 workers lost their jobs during 1983-84 following the closure of privately owned textile mills in Ahmedabad.

Manchester of India Today

The decline of traditional mills did not end Ahmedabad’s textile importance. The industry has shifted towards more diversified and value-added activities.

  • Modern textile activities include spinning, weaving, processing, garments, apparel, man-made fibres and technical textiles.
  • Gujarat continues to be an important textile-producing state.
  • Ahmedabad has also developed a diversified economy covering pharmaceuticals, chemicals, engineering, services and information technology.
