Ayad River, also known as the Ahar River, is a seasonal river that flows through Udaipur in Rajasthan. It originates in the Gogunda Hills in the north-western part of Udaipur district and plays an important role in the city’s lake system. The river receives water from Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake, feeds Udaisagar Lake, and eventually joins the Berach River. The Ayad River is also important for its archaeological heritage, as it is associated with the ancient Ahar-Banas Chalcolithic culture.
Origin of the Ayad River
The Ayad River originates in the Gogunda Hills in north-western Udaipur district of Rajasthan. These hills form part of the Aravalli landscape, which influences the drainage patterns of the region.
- Source: Gogunda Hills, Rajasthan.

- Rainfall pattern: The basin receives around 90% of its annual rainfall from the southwest monsoon between July and mid-October.
- Importance: It forms part of the natural drainage system connected to Udaipur’s lakes.
Course of the Ayad River
The Ayad River flows through Udaipur city and connects several important lakes before continuing towards the Berach River.
- Lake Pichola: The river system receives water discharged from Lake Pichola.
- Fateh Sagar Lake: Water from Fateh Sagar Lake also contributes to the river’s flow.
- Udaipur city: The river passes through the urban landscape, where it is affected by drainage, construction and human activities.
- Udaisagar Lake: The river feeds Udaisagar Lake, an important water body in the region.
- Berach River: The Ayad eventually joins the Berach River, linking it to the wider river network of Rajasthan.
Tributaries and Drainage System of the Ayad River
The Ayad River forms part of the larger drainage network of northern and eastern Rajasthan. Its connection with the Berach River links it to the Ganga river system.
The river system follows this broad drainage sequence:
- Ayad River: Flows through Udaipur and feeds Udaisagar Lake.
- Berach River: Receives the Ayad River’s flow.
- Banas River: The Berach joins the Banas river system.
- Chambal River: The Banas drains into the Chambal River.
- Yamuna River: The Chambal joins the Yamuna.
- Ganga River: The Yamuna eventually joins the Ganga.
Archaeological Significance of the Ayad River
The Ayad River is historically important because of its association with the Ahar-Banas Chalcolithic culture, an ancient archaeological culture of south-eastern Rajasthan.
The culture is generally dated to approximately 3000 BC–1500 BC and is associated with early settled communities that used copper tools and practised agriculture.
- Ancient settlements: The Ayad region is associated with archaeological remains of early human settlements.
- Chalcolithic culture: The Ahar-Banas culture represents an important phase in the development of early communities in Rajasthan.
