Poonch River, also known as the Punch River, Punch Tohi or Tohi of Punch, is a snow-fed perennial river that flows through Jammu and Kashmir in India and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. It originates in the foothills of the Pir Panjal Range and flows through mountainous valleys before entering Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The river is an important tributary of the Jhelum River and supports local ecosystems, fisheries and hydropower generation.

Poonch River Origin

The Poonch River originates in the south-facing foothills of the Pir Panjal Range, around Neel-Kanth Gali and Jamian Gali. In its upper reaches, the river is locally known as the Suran River or Siran.

The river receives water from snowmelt, springs and precipitation in the surrounding mountains. Its perennial nature makes it an important source of freshwater for settlements and ecosystems along its course.

  • Source region: Foothills of the Pir Panjal Range.
  • Local name: Suran or Siran in the upper reaches.
  • Water source: Snowmelt, rainfall and mountain streams.
  • Geographical setting: Mountain valleys of the western Himalayas.

Course of the Poonch River

The Poonch River flows through the mountainous terrain of Jammu and Kashmir before crossing into Pakistan-administered Kashmir and joining the Jhelum river system.

  • Upper course: The river originates near Neel-Kanth Gali and Jamian Gali in the Pir Panjal foothills.
  • Poonch town: It flows southward and westward towards Poonch town in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Southwestern course: After passing Poonch, the river bends towards the southwest and continues into Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
  • Downstream settlements: The river passes through areas associated with Sehra, Tatta Pani, Kotli and Mirpur.
  • Final destination: Its waters drain into the Mangla Reservoir, which is associated with the Jhelum River system.

The river has an approximate length of 150 km, although measurements may vary depending on the source and the section included.

Tributaries of the Poonch River

The Poonch River receives water from several tributaries and mountain streams that contribute to its flow.

  • Mandi River: Drains parts of the mountainous region around Mandi.
  • Nimbal Katha: A tributary that contributes water to the river system.
  • Darungli River: Adds runoff from the surrounding hills.
  • Betaar River: An important stream within the Poonch drainage network.
  • Ranguri River: Contributes water from the surrounding catchment.
  • Rangar River: Forms part of the tributary network associated with the river.

These tributaries collect water from the Pir Panjal region and help sustain the Poonch River throughout the year.

Hydropower Projects on the Poonch River

The Poonch River has hydropower potential because of its mountainous course and flowing water. Hydropower projects use the river’s water to generate electricity for regional energy needs.

Gulpur Hydropower Project

The Gulpur Hydropower Project is an important infrastructure project located on the Poonch River in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

  • Purpose: Generate electricity using the river’s flow.
  • Regional importance: Contributes to the local and regional power supply.
  • Water management: Uses river water as part of its hydropower operations.
  • Environmental consideration: Hydropower development requires attention to river flow, fish migration, aquatic habitats and downstream ecological needs.

Parnai Hydropower Project

The Parnai Hydropower Project is another project associated with the wider water and energy infrastructure of Jammu and Kashmir. Its relationship to the Poonch River should be distinguished from projects directly located on the river.

Ecological Importance of the Poonch River

Poonch River plays an important role in maintaining aquatic biodiversity and supporting freshwater ecosystems in the western Himalayan region.

  • Mahseer Conservation: Provides habitat for the endangered Golden Mahseer (Tor putitora), an important freshwater fish species.
  • Aquatic Biodiversity: Supports indigenous and other fish species that depend on healthy river habitats.
  • Breeding Grounds: Provides suitable conditions for fish feeding, reproduction and growth.
  • Wildlife Habitat: Sustains aquatic organisms and supports the broader biodiversity of the surrounding river ecosystem.
  • Protected Areas: An approximately 85-km stretch in Pakistan-administered Kashmir is associated with the Poonch River Mahaseer National Park, which aims to protect aquatic biodiversity.
  • River Flow and Ecosystem Health: Snowmelt and mountain runoff help maintain freshwater habitats and support aquatic life.
  • Ecological Balance: Healthy river conditions help sustain food chains and preserve the natural functioning of the river ecosystem.
