Bhimtal Lake Origin and Formation

Bhimtal is a natural freshwater lake of tectonic origin, formed due to faulting and crustal movements associated with the upliftment of the Himalayas.

  • Geological studies classify it as one of the tectonic lakes of the Kumaon Himalayas.
  • Like Nainital and Sattal, the lake occupies a depression created by movements along geological faults.
  • In 1883, the British constructed a masonry dam across the lake to regulate its water level and increase its storage capacity.
  • Today, the lake functions both as a natural water body and an important freshwater reservoir.

  • A small island situated at the centre of the lake houses an aquarium, making it one of the few lakes in India with such a feature.
