Bhupen Hazarika was an Assamese singer, composer, lyricist, filmmaker and cultural figure who used music and cinema to highlight humanism, social justice, cultural identity and national integration. Popularly known as the “Bard of the Brahmaputra,” he played an important role in taking the culture and concerns of Assam and Northeast India to a wider audience.

Who was Bhupen Hazarika?

Bhupen Hazarika was born on 8 September 1926 at Sadiya in Assam. He developed an interest in music at an early age and went on to become one of the most influential cultural personalities of Northeast India.

He studied at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and later went to the United States, where he earned a doctoral degree in Mass Communication from Columbia University.

His exposure to different cultures influenced his understanding of music as a means of social communication. He worked in Assamese, Bengali and Hindi, helping regional cultural traditions reach wider audiences.

Bhupen Hazarika’s Contribution

Hazarika used music and cinema to express social concerns, preserve cultural traditions and promote humanist values.

  • Bhupen Hazarika addressed social issues such as poverty, inequality, exploitation and communal harmony through his songs and films, often giving voice to the experiences of ordinary people.
  • He drew extensively from Assam’s folk traditions, combining traditional musical forms with contemporary themes and thereby giving regional culture a wider audience.
  • The Brahmaputra became a recurring symbol in his work, representing the landscape, people and cultural identity of Assam.
  • He helped bring the culture and concerns of Northeast India to the national stage, at a time when the region had limited representation in mainstream Indian cultural discourse.

Bhupen Hazarika Awards and Honours

Bhupen Hazarika received several major national honours for his contribution to Indian culture.

  • Padma Shri – 1977
  • Sangeet Natak Akademi Award – 1987
  • Padma Bhushan – 2001
  • Padma Vibhushan – 2012, posthumously
  • Bharat Ratna – 2019, posthumously

He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to folk music of Assam.

Bhupen Hazarika Death and Legacy

Bhupen Hazarika died on 5 November 2011 in Mumbai.

His legacy continues through his music, films and writings, which remain closely associated with Assamese cultural identity and the wider cultural heritage of Northeast India.

The Bhupen Hazarika Museum at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati preserves materials related to his life and work.

The Bhupen Hazarika Bridge, India’s longest road bridge when inaugurated in 2017, connects Assam with Arunachal Pradesh across the Lohit River and was named in his honour.
