Importance of BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy 2030 for India

The strategy is important for India because BRICS countries are major trading and investment partners, while India is also seeking to diversify its supply chains and expand exports. The framework can support India’s MSMEs, services sector, digital economy and manufacturing while strengthening its role in the Global South.

  • Boosts Trade and Exports: India’s merchandise exports stood at US$437.70 billion in 2024-25. Better market access within BRICS can help Indian sectors such as pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, electronics and agriculture expand their exports.
  • Reduces Trade Dependence: China alone accounted for about US$131.62 billion of India’s imports in FY 2025-26 (YTD), while imports from Russia were about US$55.36 billion. Stronger BRICS cooperation can help India diversify sourcing and build more balanced trade relationships.
  • Supports MSMEs: The strategy’s focus on trade finance, credit assessment and invoice discounting can help Indian MSMEs overcome financing barriers and participate in international trade and global value chains.
  • Strengthens Supply Chains: India can attract investment by becoming a more reliable manufacturing and sourcing hub, particularly in pharmaceuticals, electronics, critical sectors and agriculture. This can reduce excessive dependence on a single source.
  • Promotes Digital Economy: India can leverage its experience with UPI and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) to promote cross-border digital payments, digital services and e-commerce among BRICS economies.
  • Improves Financial Cooperation: Greater use of national currencies and efficient cross-border payment systems can reduce transaction costs and make trade settlements easier for Indian businesses.

BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy 2030 Major Outcomes of Jaipur Meeting

16th BRICS Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Jaipur focused on finalising the BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy 2030 and making economic cooperation more practical. The meeting addressed trade, services, MSMEs, supply chains, digital economy and financial cooperation.

  • Economic Partnership Strategy 2030: The strategy was finalised under India’s 2026 BRICS Chairship as the long-term framework for economic cooperation beyond 2025.
  • WTO-Centred Trade System: BRICS reaffirmed support for an open, transparent and rules-based multilateral trading system, with the WTO at its core.
  • Global Value Chains: The GVC Action Plan 2026-2030 was advanced to promote diversified and resilient supply chains and reduce excessive dependence on a single source.
  • MSME Support: The meeting focused on improving trade finance and credit access for MSMEs, including work on an invoice discounting mechanism and credit assessment frameworks.
  • Digital Services: BRICS adopted principles to facilitate digitally delivered services across borders, covering areas such as digital trade, technology and innovation.
  • Services Trade: Greater emphasis was placed on expanding intra-BRICS trade in services, creating opportunities for sectors such as IT, professional services and digital businesses.

These outcomes are important because they seek to move BRICS economic cooperation from broad commitments towards practical mechanisms for trade, finance, MSMEs, digital services and resilient supply chains.
