Table of Contents

Countries and their national games represent a nation’s culture, traditions, and popular sporting choices. These games may be officially declared or widely accepted based on popularity among people. They reflect the history, lifestyle, and values of a country and help in building national pride and unity. National games are often promoted through schools, events, and international competitions, preserving both traditional and modern sports.

Countries and their National Games List

Countries and their national games highlight the cultural identity and sporting preferences of different nations. Some countries have national sports that are De Facto, meaning they are widely accepted and popular but not officially declared by law. For example, games like baseball in the United States or cricket in Australia are followed by people as national sports even without legal status. On the other hand, some sports are De Jure, which means they are formally recognized by law, such as taekwondo in South Korea. Below is a list of countries along with their national games, reflecting their traditions and popular sports

National Game of India

  • Many people commonly believe that Hockey is the national game of India, but this is actually a misconception. According to an official Right to Information (RTI) response, the Government of India has not declared any sport as the national game.
  • Field Hockey became strongly associated with India because of its outstanding historical achievements, especially during the period 1928 to 1956, when India dominated the Olympics by winning six consecutive gold medals.
  • Overall, the Indian hockey team has achieved remarkable success by winning 8 Olympic gold medals, 1 silver, and 4 bronze, making it one of the most successful teams in Olympic history. This success played a major role in people assuming it to be the national game.
  • India has also produced some of the greatest hockey players in the world, such as Dhyan Chand, Balbir Singh Sr., and Dhanraj Pillai, whose contributions further strengthened hockey’s popularity and emotional connection with the country.
  • Apart from hockey, some people consider Kabaddi or Cricket as the national game due to their mass popularity and international achievements, but these assumptions are also incorrect as none of them have official status.
  • The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has clearly stated that no sport has been officially designated as the national game, as the government’s aim is to encourage and promote all sports equally rather than prioritizing one.
  • In 2020, an RTI query filed by a school teacher from Maharashtra confirmed that there is no official record or declaration regarding any national game of India.
  • After India’s strong performance in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, especially the men’s hockey team winning a bronze medal after 41 years, there were renewed demands to declare hockey as the national game, but no formal decision has been taken.
  • A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was also filed in the Supreme Court requesting the declaration of hockey as the national sport, but the court dismissed the petition, leaving the status unchanged.
  • Even though Hockey holds great historical importance and emotional value in India, officially India does not have any national game, as no sport has been declared by law.
