• The Sahitya Akademi has announced its annual Sahitya Akademi Awards 2025 for works in 24 Indian languages recognised by it, highlighting the richness of India’s multilingual literary tradition.
• This year, a total of 24 books were selected across various literary categories, including 8 poetry collections, 4 novels, 6 short story collections, 2 essays, 1 literary criticism, 1 autobiography, and 2 memoirs, showing diversity in literary forms.
• The awards are given every year through a well-established and transparent selection process, ensuring credibility and recognition of genuine literary merit.
• For the 2025 awards, the selection process began with an open advertisement issued on 30 January 2025, inviting nominations from across the country.
• The final selection was made by distinguished jury members for each of the 24 languages, and the recommendations were later approved by the competent authority of Sahitya Akademi, maintaining institutional integrity.

About Sahitya Akademi Award

• The Sahitya Akademi Award, established in 1954, is one of the most prestigious literary honours in India and is considered the second highest literary award after the Jnanpith Award, recognising outstanding books of literary merit.
• It is given annually by the Sahitya Akademi, which is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Culture, ensuring credibility and independence in the selection process.
• The award covers 24 languages, including the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of Indian Constitution, along with English and Rajasthani, thereby ensuring representation of both constitutional and non-scheduled languages.
• The eligibility criteria require that the work must be an original contribution, published within the five years preceding the award, and the author must be an Indian citizen, ensuring both relevance and authenticity.
• Every year, one award is given per language, and it can be for different literary genres such as poetry, novels, essays, drama, criticism, and other forms of writing, depending on the best work available.
• The award consists of a copper plaque, a shawl, a citation, and a cash prize of ₹1,00,000, which has increased significantly from the initial ₹5,000 given in 1955, reflecting its growing importance.
