The Fields Medal 2026, one of the highest honours in mathematics, was announced during the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2026 held in Philadelphia, USA, from 23-30 July 2026. The 2026 edition was significant as it was the first ICM hosted in the United States since 1986.The medal was awarded to Yu Deng, John Pardon, Hong Wang and Jacob Tsimerman for their outstanding contributions to modern mathematics. 

About Fields Medal

The Fields Medal is the world’s highest honour in mathematics, recognising exceptional mathematical achievements and encouraging future research among young mathematicians. The Fields Medal was instituted by Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields and was first awarded in 1936 to Lars Ahlfors and Jesse Douglas at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), Oslo.

  • Awarded every four years during the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM).
  • Conferred by the International Mathematical Union (IMU).
  • Awarded to mathematicians below 40 years of age on 1 January of the award year.

Fields Medal 2026 Winners

The Fields Medal 2026 recognised four mathematicians whose work has solved long-standing mathematical problems and expanded the frontiers of modern mathematics, with important applications in physics, geometry, number theory and Artificial Intelligence.

Yu Deng (University of Chicago, USA)

  • Yu Deng was awarded the Fields Medal for solving a part of David Hilbert’s Sixth Problem, one of the famous 23 mathematical problems proposed in 1900.
  • His work created a strong connection between the microscopic world of particles and the macroscopic behaviour of fluids such as water flow.
  • In simple terms, he mathematically explained how the movement and interaction of individual particles can lead to large-scale physical phenomena.
  • His research strengthened the foundations of kinetic theory and fluid dynamics, creating a major link between mathematics and physics.
  • Deng, who won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 2006, became the first Chinese national since Shing-Tung Yau (1982) to receive the Fields Medal.

John Pardon (Stony Brook University, USA)

  • Honoured for solving the 20-year-old MNOP Conjecture, a landmark problem involving Calabi-Yau threefolds, and for developing the theory of Virtual Fundamental Cycles, now widely used in modern geometry.
  • His work advances symplectic geometry, which provides the mathematical framework for describing the motion of physical systems and has applications in theoretical physics, including string theory.
  • Earlier gained international recognition for solving a 30-year-old knot distortion problem while still an undergraduate.

Hong Wang (New York University, USA)

  • Hong Wang was awarded the Fields Medal for solving the three-dimensional Kakeya Conjecture, a major mathematical problem that remained unsolved for nearly 50 years.
  • Her work advanced harmonic analysis (the study of patterns and waves) and geometric measure theory (the study of geometric structures and their properties).
  • Her research has applications in areas such as signal processing, wave analysis and partial differential equations.
  • She became the third woman to receive the Fields Medal, after Maryam Mirzakhani (2014) and Maryna Viazovska (2022).

Jacob Tsimerman (University of Toronto, Canada)

  • Jacob Tsimerman was awarded the Fields Medal for his pioneering work connecting number theory, algebraic geometry and mathematical logic.
  • He proved Griffiths’ Conjecture by applying the concept of o-minimality, a tool from mathematical logic that helps study complex geometric structures.
  • Earlier in his career, he contributed to the proof of the Andre-Oort Conjecture, a major problem in number theory and geometry, for which he received the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2015.

India and the Fields Medal

Although no Indian citizen has won the Fields Medal, mathematicians of Indian origin have made significant contributions.

  • Manjul Bhargava (2014) became the first mathematician of Indian origin to receive the Fields Medal for his pioneering work in number theory.
  • Akshay Venkatesh (2018) received the Fields Medal for groundbreaking contributions linking analytic number theory, topology and homogeneous dynamics.
  • India’s rich mathematical heritage, represented by Srinivasa Ramanujan, continues to inspire global mathematical research through recognitions such as the SASTRA Ramanujan Prize.
