The Folk Arts of Maharashtra reflect the state’s rich tribal traditions, local lifestyles, religious beliefs, and connection with nature. Major Folk Arts of Maharashtra

Warli Painting

• Warli Painting is one of the most well-known tribal art forms of Maharashtra and is traditionally associated with the Warli community living mainly in the northern Sahyadri region, particularly around Palghar and Thane.
• The paintings are known for their simple geometric shapes. Circles, triangles, and squares are used to represent elements of nature, people, houses, trees, and other aspects of village life.
• Traditionally, Warli paintings were made on mud walls during important occasions such as weddings, harvests, and festivals. Artists used a white pigment prepared from rice paste, along with natural materials and simple bamboo-stick brushes.
• The themes mainly focus on farming, hunting, animals, festivals, community life and nature. The famous Tarpa dance is also commonly represented through circular arrangements of human figures.
• Warli art reflects the community’s close relationship with nature, agriculture and social life. Today, it is also created on paper, cloth, wood, furniture, and other products. Warli Painting has been officially registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) since 2014.

Chitrakathi Painting

• Chitrakathi is a traditional storytelling art associated with Pinguli village in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. It developed as a visual medium for narrating stories from epics and traditional folklore.
• The art was traditionally practiced by the Thakar community, which used painted panels or scrolls to narrate episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and other mythological stories.
• Chitrakathi paintings use bold colours, strong outlines and expressive figures. Each sequence of paintings works like a visual story, helping the artist narrate events to an audience.
• The tradition declined over time but is now being revived and promoted as an important part of Maharashtra’s cultural heritage.

Sawantwadi Craft

• Sawantwadi craft is a traditional handicraft of the Konkan region, particularly associated with Sawantwadi in Sindhudurg district. It is famous for its colourful wooden toys, lacquerware, decorative objects and Ganjifa cards.
• The craft includes lacquer work, wood turning, painting and decorative designs. Artisans create objects such as toys, dolls, chess sets, fruits, vegetables, boxes and other decorative items.
• Sawantwadi art also includes three important styles – Chitrakathi, Temple and Ganjifa. Ganjifa is particularly known for its traditionally painted playing cards featuring mythological themes.
• The craft has been preserved through generations of artisans and continues to represent the traditional artistic identity of Maharashtra’s Konkan region.

Dhokra Art

• Dhokra is a traditional metal-casting craft associated with tribal and artisan communities. It involves creating objects and figurines using the lost-wax casting technique.
• Artisans first prepare a model using wax and other natural materials, create a clay mould around it, and then heat the mould so that the wax melts away. Molten metal is then poured into the mould, creating the final object.
• Dhokra products commonly include figurines, decorative objects, ritual items, lamps and household articles. The craft is valued for its handmade appearance and traditional designs.
• In Maharashtra, Dhokra continues to be supported as part of the state’s traditional handicraft heritage, particularly among tribal artisan communities.

Biridware and Traditional Pottery

• Traditional pottery and ceramic crafts form another part of Maharashtra’s folk craft traditions. These crafts use materials such as clay and mud to create useful and decorative objects.
• The pottery may feature geometric patterns, painted designs, and distinctive shapes. Traditionally, such objects have been used for household, ceremonial and cultural purposes.
