Home Ministers of India have played an important role in maintaining internal security, public order and domestic administration since Independence. The Union Home Minister heads the Ministry of Home Affairs and is one of the senior most members of the Union Council of Ministers. Home Minister of India
The Home Minister of India is the head of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in the Government of India. The Home Minister is appointed as a Union Cabinet Minister and functions as part of the Union Council of Ministers under the constitutional framework. The Minister is responsible for India’s internal security, domestic policy, law and order and border management. The Home Minister is assisted by Ministers of State, civil servants and scientific and professional advisers for effective administration.

Who is the Current Home Minister of India 2026?
The current Union Home Minister of India is Amit Shah. He has served as the Home Minister since 30 May 2019. He continued in the office after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) formed the government for a third consecutive term following the 2024 General Elections. Before becoming Home Minister, Amit Shah held important organisational responsibilities in the Bharatiya Janata Party and served as its National President.
Who was the First Home Minister of India?
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the first Home Minister of independent India. He also served as the first Deputy Prime Minister. He is widely known as the “Iron Man of India.” One of his greatest contributions was the integration of more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union. He also played a major role in strengthening national unity, establishing the administrative framework of independent India and maintaining internal security during the country’s early years.
