India’s First Indigenous Micro-GPU, Features, Significance

India’s First Indigenous Micro-GPU was developed by researchers at the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Delhi on 24-25 September 2026. The project was led by M.Tech students Nammi Akash and M. Ravi Teja under Professor Jayadeva and Professor Kaushik Saha. It is the country’s first working and demonstrable indigenously designed micro-GPU from a university, with applications in affordable embedded graphics systems.

India’s First Indigenous Micro-GPU Features

The IIT Delhi micro-GPU combines programmable graphics rendering with a compact architecture designed for embedded hardware and future indigenous semiconductor development.

• Custom GPU Engine: India’s First Indigenous Micro-GPU uses a custom floating point GPU engine for programmable graphics rendering tasks. The complete design was implemented in Register Transfer Language (RTL).
• FPGA Platform: The micro-GPU was mapped onto a Spartan 7 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). FPGAs allow digital logic to be reconfigured after manufacturing and are useful for testing processor designs.
• Programmable Architecture: The architecture is designed as a scalable and programmable graphics processor intellectual property block. It can be implemented on FPGAs or mapped to silicon Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs).
• Development Team: M.Tech students Nammi Akash and M. Ravi Teja led the project under Professor Jayadeva and Professor Kaushik Saha at IIT Delhi’s Electrical Engineering Department.
• Future Roadmap: The team is exploring an 8-16 core vector style graphics processor with an optimised compiler and graphics software toolchain. The planned ASIC proof of concept targets a 65nm process node.

The India’s First Indigenous Micro-GPU project has significance for indigenous computing hardware, affordable embedded systems and future domestic graphics processing capabilities.

• Reduced Import Dependence: India’s First Indigenous Micro-GPU can support efforts to reduce dependence on imported GPU technology. The project creates an indigenous architecture for graphics and display processing.
• Affordable Technology: The architecture targets practical embedded applications where low cost graphics processing is required. It can support affordable digital access platforms and embedded visualisation systems.
• Semiconductor Development: The planned 65nm ASIC proof of concept could support economically viable graphics silicon for embedded applications. The team is also seeking funding for ASIC development, system integration and commercialisation.
