Jongsong Peak is a prominent mountain in the eastern Himalayas, rising to about 7,462 metres above sea level. Located near the India-Nepal-China (Tibet) tri-junction, it is known for its high altitude, challenging terrain and importance in the history of Himalayan mountaineering.

Jongsong Peak Location

  • Jongsong Peak is a high mountain of the Himalayas, located in the Janak section of the Himalayan range.
  • It lies at the tri-junction of India, Nepal and China (Tibet), making it a significant transboundary mountain in the eastern Himalayas. The summit is located close to the Sikkim-Nepal-Tibet border region.
  • On the Indian side, the peak is associated with North Sikkim, while its northern and western surroundings extend towards Tibet and eastern Nepal. The mountain is part of the broader Kangchenjunga Himalayan region.
  • Jongsong Peak rises to an elevation of about 7,462 metres (24,482 feet) and is generally listed as the 57th-highest mountain in the world.
  • It is situated around 20 km northeast of Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain, and is geographically connected with the high mountain and glacier systems of the eastern Himalayas.

Jongsong Peak Geographical Significance

  • Jongsong Peak is particularly important because its main summit forms a tripoint between India, Nepal and China (Tibet). This makes it one of the notable border mountains of the eastern Himalayas.
  • With an elevation of 7,462 metres, it is one of the prominent 7,000-metre peaks of the Himalayas and has considerable geographical and mountaineering importance.
  • The mountain forms part of the Janak Himal and lies within a rugged landscape of high-altitude glaciers, snow-covered ridges and steep mountain slopes. The Jongsong Glacier is one of the important glacial features associated with the mountain.
  • Its location close to Kangchenjunga places it within one of the most significant high-mountain regions of the eastern Himalayas. The surrounding terrain is remote and difficult to access, adding to its importance for Himalayan exploration and mountaineering.
  • Jongsong Peak also has a notable place in mountaineering history. It was first climbed in 1930 by Hermann Hoerlin and Erwin Schneider during the international Himalayan expedition led by Günter Dyhrenfurth.
  • Following its first ascent, Jongsong Peak remained the highest mountain successfully climbed in the world until the first ascent of Kamet (7,756 m) in 1931.
  • The mountain continues to have mountaineering significance. In 2012, a Himalayan Club expedition led by Pradeep Chandra Sahoo reached the eastern summit of Jongsong by a new route from the Sikkim side, highlighting the continuing exploration of the remote high-altitude region.
