Who Was Mother Teresa?
Mother Teresa was a Catholic nun and humanitarian who dedicated her life to serving people living in poverty and suffering. Born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, she joined the Sisters of Loreto at the age of 18 and came to India to work as a teacher.
She initially taught at a school in Calcutta, but her experiences of poverty outside the convent had a deep impact on her. In 1948, she received permission to leave the convent school and begin working among the poorest people in the city. She started an open-air school for children living in the slums and gradually expanded her humanitarian activities.

Mother Teresa was born on 26 August 1910 in Skopje to an Albanian family. Her birth name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She was the third child of Nikola Bojaxhiu and Drane Bojaxhiu.
From an early age, she developed a strong interest in religious service and helping people in need. According to the Nobel Prize biography, she felt a strong religious calling when she was around 12 years old.
At the age of 18, she left her home and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish religious community with missions in India. After training in Dublin, she travelled to India and began her work as a teacher.
Mother Teresa’s Journey to India
Mother Teresa came to India in 1929 after joining the Sisters of Loreto. She initially worked as a teacher and later became the principal of St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta.
Her years in Calcutta exposed her closely to poverty, hunger and illness. These experiences influenced her decision to dedicate her life to people living in extreme poverty.
In 1948, she received permission to leave the convent school and work directly among the poor. She began by teaching children in an open-air school and providing assistance to people who had little access to basic necessities.
Missionaries of Charity
The Missionaries of Charity was founded by Mother Teresa in 1950 after she received permission from the Holy See to establish the order. Its primary purpose was to care for people who were poor, sick, abandoned or otherwise neglected.
The organisation gradually expanded beyond Kolkata and eventually established centres in different parts of the world. Its activities included caring for orphaned children, people with serious illnesses, people affected by leprosy and the terminally ill.
