National Nutrition Week is an annual awareness initiative that promotes understanding of nutrition and encourages healthier dietary practices among people.
About National Nutrition Week
- National Nutrition Week is observed from 1 to 7 September every year in India.
- It aims to create awareness about the importance of nutrition, healthy diets, and appropriate dietary practices
- It was first observed in India in 1982 under the initiative of the Food and Nutrition Board.
- The Week focuses on balanced diets, dietary diversity, micronutrients, maternal and child nutrition and healthy eating practices.
- Anganwadi centres, schools, healthcare institutions and community organisations conduct nutrition education and awareness activities during the Week.
- It seeks to promote behavioural change and community participation while complementing India’s wider efforts to improve nutrition outcomes.
Other Nutrition Awareness Initiatives in India
National Nutrition Week is part of a wider set of campaigns that seek to build public awareness and community participation around nutrition.
- Rashtriya Poshan Maah is observed during September to generate awareness and encourage community action on nutrition under the broader POSHAN framework.
- Poshan Pakhwada is a fortnight-long campaign focused on nutrition awareness, behavioural change and community mobilisation.
- POSHAN Abhiyaan uses a Jan Andolan approach to make nutrition a collective responsibility and promote sustained behavioural change.
- Eat Right India promotes safe, healthy and sustainable food choices through awareness, education and food-system interventions.
- Anaemia Mukt Bharat focuses specifically on preventing and controlling anaemia through screening, iron-folic acid supplementation, treatment and behaviour-change communication.
Why Is National Nutrition Week Important for India?
National Nutrition Week is important because India’s nutrition challenge is large, persistent and changing, requiring sustained public awareness along with government action.
- Child undernutrition remains a concern, although stunting among children under five declined from 35.5% in NFHS-5 to 29.3% in NFHS-6 (2023–24).
- Progress remains uneven, with underweight at 31.8% and wasting at around 19%, despite a decline in severe wasting from 7.7% to 5.2%.
- Anaemia continues to require attention, with NFHS-5 reporting anaemia among 57% of women aged 15-49 years and 67% of children aged 6-59 months.
- India faces a double burden of malnutrition, where undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies coexist with overweight, obesity and diet-related diseases.
These nutrition challenges have wider consequences, as poor nutrition during pregnancy and childhood can affect growth, cognitive development, learning and future productivity. This makes nutrition awareness important alongside government schemes, particularly for promoting dietary diversity, balanced diets, appropriate infant feeding and healthier food choices. National Nutrition Week therefore provides an important platform to keep nutrition on the public agenda and translate awareness into healthier dietary practices at the household and community levels
