National Unity Day 2026 highlights India’s national integration, unity in diversity and the importance of preserving social harmony. The observance honours Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s role in nation-building, with the 2026 celebrations in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, featuring a unity parade, cultural programmes and the Run for Unity.
When is National Unity Day 2026?
National Unity Day 2026 will be observed on Saturday, 31 October, to mark the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. The day honours his contribution to national integration and promotes unity, integrity and harmony among citizens. The main celebrations will be held at the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat.
What is the theme of National Unity Day 2026?
The unifying theme of the National Unity Day 2026 celebrations and the accompanying Bharat Parv festival in Gujarat is “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”, which promotes national integration and unity in diversity.
The celebrations will also highlight the following focus areas:
- Vande Mataram: Commemorating 150 years of India’s national song.
- Drug-free India: Spreading awareness about drug abuse prevention and encouraging public participation in the campaign against drugs.
- National Security: Highlighting the role of police forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in combating armed Naxalism.
- Cultural Integration: Showcasing India’s diverse cultures and strengthening connections among people from different states and regions through Bharat Parv.
Why is National Unity Day Celebrated?
At the time of Independence in 1947, India consisted of British Indian provinces and more than 560 princely states. Integrating these territories into a united political entity was one of the major challenges faced by the new government.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, as the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, played a central role in this process. Working with V. P. Menon and other officials, he used diplomacy, negotiation and political leadership to facilitate the accession and integration of princely states.
National Unity Day commemorates this contribution and highlights the importance of national cohesion, constitutional values and collective responsibility.
The observance also encourages citizens to uphold national unity despite differences in language, religion, region and culture.
