New Cat Species 2026 refers to the identification of Leopardus Tilcayo, a small wild cat from Bolivia’s Yungas cloud forest. It is the first newly identified living cat species to be formally described in more than 100 years. The species belongs to the tiger cat group and is known locally as tilcayo. Genetic evidence confirmed that it represents a distinct species within the cat family.

The discovery of New Cat Species 2026 followed research on tiger cats across South America. Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz first encountered the unusual cat in 2016. It had been kept by a local family after being found as a kitten. Genetic analysis of 38 cats, including eight museum specimens, showed five genetically distinct tiger cat species. Leopardus Tilcayo separated from related tiger cats about 1.4 million years ago.

Leopardus Tilcayo is among the smallest wild cats in the Leopardus genus. Its limited records currently make its distribution, behaviour and population status uncertain.

• Scientific Name: The newly identified species is named Leopardus Tilcayo. Researchers retained the local name tilcayo used by communities in the Bolivian region.
• First Cat Species in Over a Century: New Cat Species 2026 is the first formally described living feline species in more than 100 years. The previous such description was the Pampas cat L. fasciatus in 1923.
• Physical Size: The tilcayo measures about 18 inches or 46 centimetres in body length. It weighs about 3 pounds or 1.4 kilograms, making it smaller than an average domestic cat.
• Appearance: Its fur is light brown with large, irregular rosettes. The dark brown to black markings are mostly open or partly closed. It has short round ears, long whiskers and a distinctive compact face.
• Distribution and Habitat: The species has been identified in La Paz, Nor Yungas, near Arapata, at about 1,570 metres above sea level. It inhabits the Yungas cloud forest on Bolivia’s eastern Andean slopes.
• Diet and Activity: Small rodents found in fecal samples indicate that rodents may form part of its diet. Camera trap records suggest that the cat may be more active during nighttime.
• Conservation Status: As of September 2026, Leopardus Tilcayo has not received a formal IUCN Red List assessment. The researchers have shared their findings with the IUCN for separate assessment of the five lineages.
• Threats to Habitat: The Yungas forest faces pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, human caused fires and mining. Protecting native forest, restoring damaged areas and maintaining habitat connections are important conservation priorities.
• Related Discovery: Researchers also described a new tiger cat subspecies from Peru’s Yungas region. It was named Leopardus tigrinus antisuyo, after Antisuyu, a region of the old Inca Empire.
