Pachaimalai Hills are a prominent hill range in Tamil Nadu and form an eastern extension of the Eastern Ghats. The name combines the Tamil words Pachai meaning “green” and Malai meaning “hill,” reflecting the extensive green vegetation that covers much of the landscape. These hills are known for their green landscapes, indigenous communities, forests, rivers and waterfalls The hills also hold historical significance as the Sangam Period of Tamil literature flourished here during the Chera, Chola and Pandya dynasties.

Pachaimalai Hills

Pachaimalai Hills form an important highland region of Tamil Nadu with diverse geographical, historical, cultural and economic features.

  • Location: Pachaimalai Hills are situated in Tamil Nadu State in southern India and form the northeastern section of the Tamil Nadu uplands.
  • Extent: The hills lie about 80 kilometres from Tiruchirappalli and also extend into the Gangavalli Taluk of Salem district.
  • Eastern Ghats Extension: The hill range represents an eastward extension of the Eastern Ghats. Along with the Javadi, Shevaroy and Kalrayan Hills, it forms an important chain of discontinuous highlands across central and northeastern Tamil Nadu.
  • Area: The hills spread across nearly 5,200 square miles (about 13,500 square kilometres).
  • Height: Elevation ranges between 1,770 feet (540 metres) and 4,620 feet (1,400 metres), creating varied landscapes from valleys to elevated plateaus.
  • Natural boundary: Pachaimalai Hills separate the Kaveri (Cauvery) River basin in the south from the Palar River basin in the north, making them an important watershed region within Tamil Nadu.
  • Geological structure: The landscape mainly consists of rounded hills made of granitic gneiss formations. These ancient rocks shape the characteristic rolling terrain found across the hill range.
  • Soils: Valleys contain fertile loamy and clayey soils suitable for cultivation, while loam rich soils occur along many hill slopes, supporting both natural vegetation and farming activities.
  • Rainfall and water resources: The hills receive an average annual rainfall of about 800 to 900 millimetres, mainly from the northeast monsoon. The region also serves as a catchment for nearly 30 lakes located at the foothills.
  • River system: The Sweata Nadi and Kallar rivers originate in these hills. The Vellar, Palar and Ponnaiyar rivers are associated with the region.
  • Waterfalls: Several streams create scenic waterfalls, including Koraiyar Falls, Mangalam Aruvi Falls and Mayil Oothu Falls, which are formed as rivers descend through the rugged hill terrain.
  • Indigenous community: The hills are named after the Pachaimalaiyali people, the indigenous inhabitants who have lived in this region for generations and continue to maintain their traditional lifestyle.

Pachaimalai Hills Significance

The key highlighting importance of the Pachaimalai Hills has been provided below:

  • Agriculture: Farming supports the regional economy. Rice, jowar (grain sorghum), gram (chickpeas), peanuts (groundnuts), sugarcane and bajra (pearl millet) are cultivated mainly as subsistence crops.
  • Plantation crops: Coffee, cashew and pepper are important commercial plantation crops produced in the hills and grown mainly for export markets.
  • Industries and minerals: Textile, food processing, chemical and engineering industries operate in the wider region. Cottage industries include mat weaving, basket weaving, carpentry, blacksmithing and bidi manufacturing. Iron ore, manganese, beryl and zinc are also mined.
  • Transport and settlements: Roads connecting the northern uplands with the eastern coast pass through valleys and natural gaps between the hill ranges. Tiruvannamalai, Attur, Ranipet, Chengam and Sengattupatti are important settlements associated with the region.

Pachaimalai Hills Biodiversity

Pachaimalai Hills support diverse forests, wildlife, streams and native vegetation, making them one of the ecologically important hill ecosystems in Tamil Nadu.

  • Forest types: The hill slopes are covered by dry evergreen and deciduous forests. Scrub jungles dominate the lower and broken slopes, while denser vegetation occupies favourable habitats across the landscape.
  • Sal forests: Flat hilltops are largely dominated by sal (Shorea robusta) forests, which form one of the characteristic vegetation types of the Pachaimalai Hills.
  • Mammals: Wildlife includes spotted deer, mouse deer, barking deer, sloth bear, slender loris, jungle cat, Indian giant squirrel, toddy cat, bonnet macaque, Indian mongoose, black naped hare and porcupine.
  • Bird diversity: The region supports many bird species, including junglefowl, barbet, flycatcher, babbler, myna, munia, flowerpecker, sunbird, parakeet, woodpecker, warbler, Indian pitta and kingfisher.
  • Threats to biodiversity: Expansion of private orchards and coffee plantations in recent years has reduced native vegetation and created increasing pressure on the natural habitats of wildlife.
  • Eco-tourism initiatives: The Government of Tamil Nadu has promoted Pachaimalai Hills as an eco-tourism destination with the objective of encouraging nature based tourism while highlighting the area’s environmental importance.
