Ramalinga Swamigal’s life combined spiritual thought, literary work and social reform. His teachings developed around Jeeva Karunyam, the belief that compassion towards living beings is central to spiritual progress.
- Birth and Family: Ramalingam was born in Marudhur on October 05th in 1823 to Ramayya Pillai and Chinnammai. He was their fifth and youngest child among two sons and two daughters.
- Early Spiritual Experience: At five months, Ramalingam visited Chidambaram Natarājar Temple with his parents. He later described seeing the divine light during Deepa Aradhana as a profound spiritual experience.
- Education and Spiritual Growth: After moving to Chennai in 1826, he received formal education from his elder brother Sabhapati. He later delivered discourses on Periya Purānam and developed from devotion to Lord Shiva towards worship of the formless divine.
- Association with Valluvar: Ramalinga was strongly influenced by Valluvar and promoted the teachings of the Tirukkural. He conducted Kural classes and stressed compassion, non violence, non killing and a meatless diet.
- Later Life and Disappearance: Ramalinga left Chennai in 1858 and stayed at Karunguzhi for nine years. On 30 January 1874, he entered a room at Mettukuppam and locked himself inside. The room was later opened and found empty.
Ramalinga Swamigal Contributions
Ramalinga Swamigal made important contributions to social reform, humanitarian service, spiritual thought, education and Tamil literature through practical institutions and widely followed teachings.
- Jeeva Karunyam: Jeeva Karunyam means compassion for living beings. Ramalinga opposed killing animals for food and considered service to living beings a path towards liberation and spiritual progress.
- Fight Against Caste Inequality: Ramalinga opposed caste based discrimination and worked towards a casteless society. He founded Samarasa Vedha Sanmarga Sangam in 1865, later renamed Samarasa Suddha Sanmarga Sathya Sangam in 1872.
- Sathya Dharma Salai: In 1867, he established Sathya Dharma Salai at Vadalur. The institution provided free food to poor and hungry people without caste distinctions. Its central ideal was that no person should remain hungry.
- Sathya Gnana Sabha: On 25 January 1872, Ramalinga opened Sathya Gnana Sabhai at Vadalur. It was designed as a secular spiritual space centred on the divine light rather than conventional idol worship.
- Seven Spiritual Screens: Sathya Gnana Sabha contains seven cotton fabric screens representing factors that prevent the soul from realising its true nature. The complex also contains a chain with 21,600 links.
- Literary Contribution: Ramalinga composed 5,818 poems on universal love and peace. These works were compiled into six Thiru Muraigal and are collectively known as Thiruvarutpa.
- Other Major Works: His writings include Manumurai Kanda Vāsagam and Jeeva Karunya Ozhukkam. The latter emphasises compassion towards sentient beings and supports a plants only diet.

- Contemporary Recognition: On 15 February 2026, Tamil Nadu announced that Vallalar’s birth anniversary would be celebrated for three days annually. A research centre on Vallalar was also announced in Chennai.
