Union Minister Jitendra Singh has launched Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar 5.0, a week-long nationwide campaign aimed at promoting cleaner beaches, reducing marine pollution, and ensuring safer oceans. The campaign focuses on strengthening public participation and raising awareness about the need to protect India’s coastal and marine ecosystems.

What is Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar 2026?

Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar, meaning “Clean Coast, Safe Sea,” is a nationwide initiative focused on cleaning India’s coastal areas and addressing the problem of marine litter.

The campaign brings together government institutions, local communities and citizens to remove waste from beaches and coastal locations. Importantly, the 2026 campaign also uses citizen participation to record and categorise marine litter, creating useful information for marine-litter monitoring.

The 2026 campaign will run from 13 September to 19 September 2026, with the campaign culminating in large-scale beach cleanup activities.

Who Organises Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar?

The campaign is organised by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and coordinated by the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), Chennai.

NCCR is an attached office of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and works on scientific and technical issues related to India’s coastal areas, including coastal water quality, marine biodiversity, litter, coastal ecosystems and coastal hazards.

At individual locations, a lead coordinating institution conducts the cleanup activities, while institutes under the Ministry of Earth Sciences provide technical coordination.
