Although Mig La became the highest motorable road in 2025, Umling La remains one of the world’s most significant high altitude mountain passes because of its border connectivity, engineering achievement, tourism value and strategic importance.

Umling La Pass is situated in the Changthang area of Ladakh near Demchok. It stands among the world’s highest mountain passes connected by a motorable road and remains an important example of high altitude infrastructure in India.

Umling La Pass Features

Umling La Pass is among the world’s highest mountain passes accessible by road. It lies close to the India-China border in eastern Ladakh.

• Location: Umling La is situated in the Changthang region of Ladakh near Demchok village. It lies on the ridge separating the Koyul Lungpa valley from the Indus River basin, making it geographically important.
• Altitude: The pass stands at about 5,799 metres (19,024 feet) above sea level. Some BRO construction references mention road sections reaching nearly 19,300 feet, reflecting the extreme elevation achieved during road construction.
• Mountain Range: Umling La forms part of the high altitude Himalayan Region landscape in the Changthang plateau. 
• Drainage: It forms the source of the Umlung stream flowing towards the Indus River, while another stream drains into the Kiungdul River through Koyul Lungpa.
• Border Location: The pass lies close to the Indo-China border near Demchok. Its location makes it strategically significant while also remaining one of the most remote and sparsely inhabited regions of Ladakh.
• Connectivity: Umling La connects Chisumle and Demchok villages through a high altitude road. The complete route strengthens accessibility in the Chumar sector and provides an important land connection.
• Distance: The Chisumle-Umling La-Demchok route extends roughly 52 to 54 km, while several references mention connectivity over nearly 86 km between the linked villages.
• Route from Leh: Travellers generally follow the route Leh → Upshi → Chumathang → Mahe → Nyoma → Hanle → Photi La → Umling La. The distance from Leh is approximately 230 to 250 km, requiring about 8 to 10 hours depending on road conditions.
• Climate: Winter temperatures can fall to -40°C, while oxygen levels remain nearly 50% lower than normal. These harsh conditions make travel and construction exceptionally challenging throughout the year.
• World Recognition: From 2017 to 2025, the Chisumle-Umling La-Demchok Road held the title of the world’s highest motorable road, surpassing Bolivia’s Uturuncu Volcano Road at 18,953 feet before Mig La overtook the record in 2025.
• Expedition Activities: Umling La attracts motorcyclists, cyclists and overland travellers. In 2022, international teams from Canada and Switzerland drove auto rickshaws to Umling La at 5,799 metres, setting the highest altitude auto rickshaw driving world record. In addition, the first ever solo woman motorcycle expedition to Umling La by Ms Kanchan Ugursandi was also officially flagged off.

Umling La Road

The Umling La Road represents one of India’s greatest high altitude infrastructure achievements and has greatly improved connectivity in eastern Ladakh.

• Construction Agency: The road was constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under Project HIMANK, which develops strategic roads across Ladakh. The project required nearly six years to complete.
• Guinness World Record: In 2021, the BRO received the Guinness World Record after constructing the world’s highest motorable road through Umling La, showcasing India’s capability in high altitude infrastructure development.
• Black-Top Road: BRO successfully black-topped the entire road despite extreme weather and difficult terrain. The project demonstrated India’s engineering capability in building durable roads at very high elevations.
• Strategic Connectivity: The road links Chisumle and Demchok while improving access to important areas in the Chumar sector. It also provides an alternate direct route connecting Leh with remote border settlements.
• Engineering Challenges: Construction teams worked under severe conditions where oxygen remained nearly 50% below normal and temperatures regularly reached -40°C. Such conditions made labour availability and road construction extremely difficult.
• Project HIMANK: Project HIMANK has also developed strategic roads through Tanglang La, Khardung La and Chang La, built the world’s highest Bailey Bridge at Khardung La and constructed the Srinagar-Leh Road, which supported Operation Vijay during the Kargil War.
• Recent Developments: In 2025, BRO’s Project HIMANK set another engineering milestone by constructing the Mig La Road at 19,400 feet, surpassing Umling La and establishing a new world record for the highest motorable road.
