World Heart Day 2026 will be observed on 29 September to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), their warning signs, prevention and global health burden. The World Heart Federation (WHF) leads this annual global campaign with its network of members. The 2026 campaign focuses on recognising hidden symptoms, protecting heart health and encouraging governments to make equitable cardiovascular health a priority.

World Heart Day 2026 History

World Heart Day 2026 developed into a global platform for spreading awareness about cardiovascular diseases and encouraging preventive action.

• Established in 1999: The World Heart Federation, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, announced the establishment of World Heart Day in 1999.
• First observed in 2000: The first World Heart Day was celebrated on 24 September 2000. It was originally observed on the last Sunday of September until 2011.
• Fixed Observance Date: World Heart Day is now observed annually on 29 September since 2012. The WHF coordinates the campaign with its global network of members and partners.
• Global campaign: The observance promotes awareness through public education, health activities, campaigns and actions focused on prevention and cardiovascular health.

What are Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs)?

Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) are a group of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels. They include coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, rheumatic heart disease and other related conditions.

• Major diseases: CVDs include coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and rheumatic heart disease. According to WHO, Heart attacks and strokes account for more than four out of five CVD deaths.
• Global deaths: According to WHO, CVDs caused an estimated 19.8 million deaths in 2022. More than 85% CVD deaths are caused by heart attacks and strokes.
• Risk factors: Major behavioural risk factors include unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and alcohol consumption. These can contribute to raised blood pressure, blood glucose, blood lipids and obesity.
• Preventable burden: The World Heart Day 2026 campaign states that 80% of CVD deaths are caused by risk factors that can be prevented or managed.

World Heart Day 2026 in India

India faces a substantial cardiovascular disease burden, making prevention, early diagnosis, affordable medicines and accessible treatment important areas of public health action. The World Heart Day 2026 highlights the major requirement and status of healthcare system related to Heart Health in India.

• Disease burden: According to WHO, NCDs caused 63% of total deaths in India in 2016. CVDs accounted for 27% of these deaths and 45% of deaths among people aged 40-69 years.
• NPCDCS: The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) is implemented under the National Health Mission (NHM) to address major non-communicable diseases.
• AMRIT outlets: Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment (AMRIT) Deendayal outlets have been opened at 159 Institutions/Hospitals to provide cancer and cardiovascular medicines and implants at discounted prices.
• Jan Aushadhi: Jan Aushadhi stores are established by the Department of Pharmaceuticals to provide generic medicines at affordable prices and improve access to essential treatment.
• Maharashtra STEMI Project: The Maharashtra government launched the ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Project, recognised by NHM in 2021, to support rapid diagnosis of heart attacks. Maharashtra’s STEMI project has helped detect over 2,000 heart attacks in a year.
• Preventive action: Tobacco cessation, lower salt intake, more fruits and vegetables, regular physical activity and avoiding alcohol can reduce cardiovascular risk. Accessible primary healthcare and timely treatment remain important for preventing premature deaths.

World Heart Day 2026 is significant because cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death globally and many associated risk factors can be prevented or managed.

• Global burden: CVD claims over 20 million lives every year as well as One out of three are killed by Heart Diseases. The campaign describes it as the world’s number one killer and calls for stronger preventive action.
• Hidden warning signs: High blood pressure often has no symptoms until a heart attack occurs. The campaign also highlights overlooked symptoms among women and people with uncontrolled hypertension.
• Congenital heart disease: Around 50% of babies born with congenital heart disease (CHD) are not diagnosed at birth, showing the importance of timely recognition and care.
• Premature deaths: The campaign states that 1 in 5 people will die prematurely from heart disease. It also highlights that most CVD deaths are linked to preventable or manageable risk factors.
