As the world’sthird-largest crude-oil importer, fourth-largest LNG importer and second-largest LPG consumer, India remains exposed to global price volatility, geopolitical disruptions and supply shocks. Hence, energy security requires not merely more energy, but a diversified, affordable and resilient energy mix.
Key Challenges to India’s Energy Security
- Import Dependence: India imports around 88% of crude oil & 51% of natural gas requirements, exposing the economy to geopolitical shocks, freight disruptions and exchange-rate volatility.
- Rising Energy Demand: Industrialisation, urbanisation and cooling demand are rapidly increasing electricity needs; India’s peak load rose from 148 GW in 2014 to 250 GW in 2024, while cooling alone contributed about 60 GWto peak load in 2024.

- Improve Energy Efficiency: Strengthen efficient appliances, buildings, industries and smart grids to moderate rising demand; lowers energy costs while improving resource productivity & competitiveness.
- Domestic Clean-Tech Manufacturing: Use PLI to expand solar, battery and electrolyser manufacturing; India has already targeted 48 GW of integrated PV manufacturing capacity, strengtheningenergy autonomy, industry and green jobs.
- Decentralised & Inclusive Energy: Expand rooftop solar and solar pumps to improve rural energy security and incomes; PM-KUSUM has benefited 21 lakh farmers through solar pumps/plants.
- Just & Sustainable Transition: Reskill coal dependent communities & repurpose mined land for green livelihoods; NITI Aayog recommends retraining, alternate employment & mine-site restoration to make the transition inclusive.
