Clouded Leopard National Park

• Clouded Leopard National Park is a small but important protected area located in the Bishalgarh subdivision of Sepahijala district in Tripura.
• It lies within the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary and was established in 2007 as India’s first dedicated park for Clouded Leopards.
• Despite its small size (about 5.08 sq. km), the park plays a key role in conserving wildlife and maintaining ecological balance.

About Clouded Leopard

• The Clouded Leopard is considered one of the smallest big cats in the world, but it is extremely agile and well adapted to forest life. It uses its long tail for balance, which helps it move easily across trees and even climb down vertical trunks headfirst.
• Distribution: It is mainly found in the Himalayan foothills, parts of North-East India, Southeast Asia, and South China, where dense forests provide suitable living conditions.
• Habitat: This species lives in a variety of environments such as grasslands, shrubs, subtropical forests, and dense tropical forests, but it prefers thick forest areas where it can hide and hunt easily.
• Physical Characteristics: The clouded leopard has a very unique coat pattern with large cloud-like spots, which gives it its name and helps in camouflage. It also has the largest canine teeth in proportion to its skull size among all cat species, making it a powerful predator despite its size.
• It is known for its excellent tree-climbing (arboreal) abilities, allowing it to rest, hunt, and move across treetops with ease, which is uncommon among many other big cats.
• Threats: The species faces several challenges such as wildfires, habitat fragmentation, deforestation, illegal poaching, and climate change, all of which reduce its population and natural habitat.
