A revolutionary who devoted his life to India’s freedom, Chandra Shekhar Azad remains one of the most respected figures in modern Indian history.

• Chandra Shekhar Azad was born as Chandra Shekhar Tiwari on 23 July 1906 in Bhabra village, now Chandrashekhar Azad Nagar in Madhya Pradesh. His birthplace was then part of the princely state of Alirajpur.
• Growing up in a financially modest family, he later moved to Benaras (Varanasi) for Sanskrit studies, where he developed strong nationalist ideas after the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.
• At only 15 years of age, he joined Mahatma Gandhi‘s Non Cooperation Movement (1920-22) and participated in protest activities, including picketing liquor shops.
• After his arrest, he identified himself as “Azad”, named his father “Swatantra” and gave his address as “Jail”. Following police flogging, he adopted Azad permanently and vowed never to be captured alive.
• When the Non Cooperation Movement was withdrawn in 1922, he shifted from non violent protest to Revolutionary Activities, believing armed resistance was necessary for India’s freedom.
• Chandra Shekhar Azad died on 27 February 1931 at Alfred Park, Allahabad (now Prayagraj) at the age of 24. He shot himself with his last bullet, fulfilling his pledge never to be captured alive. The park was later renamed Chandra Shekhar Azad Park in his honour.

Chandra Shekhar Azad strengthened the revolutionary movement through leadership, organisation and courageous action against British rule.

• Hindustan Republican Army (HRA): Azad became an important member of the Hindustan Republican Army (HRA) led by Ram Prasad Bismil, working to organise revolutionary activities against British rule.
• Kakori Train Action: He participated in the Kakori Conspiracy (1925), planned to raise funds for revolutionary activities. Among the Kakori conspirators, Azad successfully escaped arrest and remained underground.
• Reorganisation of HRA into HSRA: In 1928, along with Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Shiv Verma and Vijay Kumar Sinha, he reorganised the HRA into the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) with socialism among its major objectives.
• Military leadership: While Bhagat Singh served as the political ideologue, Azad led the military wing of HSRA by planning operations, training recruits, organising weapons and coordinating revolutionary networks.
• Lahore Action: Azad played a key role in planning the action against British officer John Saunders in 1928. The shooting was carried out by Bhagat Singh and Rajguru, while Azad supported the escape and resisted pursuing police personnel.
• Slogan: His famous declaration, “Dushman ki goliyon ka hum saamna karenge. Azad hi rahein hain, azad hi rahenge,” reflected his lifelong commitment to remain free until his final moment.

• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh remembered Azad’s lifelong struggle against British rule, highlighting his efforts to awaken self respect, self confidence, national consciousness and patriotism among countless young Indians.
• Memorial activities: Tribute ceremonies are organised at Chandra Shekhar Azad Park in Prayagraj and other memorial sites, where people offer floral respects, organise cultural programmes and remember his supreme sacrifice for the nation.
