The Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 marks the return of the Commonwealth Games to Scotland, bringing together athletes from across the Commonwealth in a compact, sustainable sporting model.

• Host and Schedule: Glasgow, Scotland, is hosting the Commonwealth Games 2026 from 23 July to 2 August 2026, welcoming athletes from 72 Commonwealth countries and territories for eleven days of international sporting competition.
• Mascot: Finnie is the official mascot of the Commonwealth Games 2026. Inspired by Scotland’s national animal, the unicorn, Finnie features a distinctive traffic cone horn and succeeds Clyde, Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games mascot.
• Organising Body: The Games are conducted under the supervision of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
• Participating Countries: A total of 72 Commonwealth Nations and territories are taking part in Glasgow 2026.
• Indoor bowls debut: Glasgow 2026 introduces indoor bowls for both able bodied and para competitions. Earlier editions featured lawn bowls on outdoor greens, making this a significant operational change without altering the sport’s basic rules.

• Closing Ceremony: The Games conclude with athletes entering the stadium together regardless of nationality. The Commonwealth Games flag is then handed over to the representatives of the next host city before the Games officially close.
• Overall medals record: Across all editions through 2018, Australia remains the most successful nation with highest medals, followed by England, Canada and India in the all time medal standings.

Commonwealth Games History

• The Commonwealth Games originated after Australian born Astley Cooper proposed an imperial sporting festival in 1891. 
• The first British Empire Games were held at Hamilton, Canada, in 1930, featuring 11 countries and around 400 athletes. 
• The Games adopted the title British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954, became the British Commonwealth Games in 1970 and have officially been known simply as the Commonwealth Games since 1978. 
• Women initially competed only in swimming during the 1930 Games. Athletics for women was introduced in 1934 and the Games achieved an equal number of medal events for men and women at Gold Coast 2018. 
• Over the decades, the Games added several disciplines, including badminton and shooting in 1966, team sports in 1998 and fully integrated para sports from 2002.

India begins its 19th Commonwealth Games appearance in Glasgow 2026 with a strong contingent featuring Olympic champions, experienced medal winners and several emerging athletes.

• India’s participation: India is competing in its 19th Commonwealth Games after making its debut at the 1934 Games, continuing a long history of participation in one of the Commonwealth’s biggest sporting events.
• Indian Representation: The Sports Ministry approved a 191 member contingent, including 126 athletes and 65 overall team officials, while Indian athletes represent multiple sports during the Glasgow 2026 competition.
• Leading Athletes: Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra, Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu and Olympic bronze winning boxer Lovlina Borgohain headline India’s athlete contingent for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
