Madras Day 2026 History and Background

Madras Day 2026 traces its historical basis to the 1639 land grant that enabled the English East India Company to establish a settlement at Madraspatnam.

  • 1639 Land Grant: Francis Day obtained a grant for the East India Company from Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka, covering a three-mile-long coastal strip at Madraspatnam.
  • Fort St. George: The English established Fort St. George at the settlement. The fort became the foundation around which Madras expanded as a trading centre.
  • Early Settlement: Francis Day and Andrew Cogan reached Madraspatnam on 20 February 1640. A renewed grant followed in 1642, while another agreement in 1645 expanded English administrative and legal authority.
  • Madras Town: Fort St. George and surrounding areas developed into White Town and Black Town. Together, these settlements came to be known as Madras.
  • Madras Day Origin: The annual celebration was conceived in 2004. The first edition began with about five events and expanded considerably in later years.
  • Date Controversy: Historical records create debate over whether the relevant deed was dated 22 July or 22 August 1639. August 22 remains the widely observed date for Madras Day.

Evolution of Madras State

The political identity of Madras changed significantly after independence, eventually becoming Tamil Nadu.

  • Madras State: After independence in 1947, the former Madras province continued as Madras State. It included territories that were later reorganised into separate South Indian states.
  • Tamil Nadu Movement: K. P. Sankaralinganar launched a movement in 1956 demanding that Madras State be renamed Tamil Nadu.
  • Renaming of State: A resolution for renaming Madras State was passed and the state officially became Tamil Nadu on January 14, 1969.
  • Chennai Renaming: Madras City was officially renamed Chennai on July 17, 1996. The name is associated with Chennapatnam and reflects the region’s local historical identity.
  • Modern Chennai: Chennai has developed into an important educational, commercial, cultural, healthcare and automobile manufacturing centre. It is also known for Carnatic music and Bharathanatyam.
  • Chennai Day 2026: Due to the change of name of Madras, Madras Day is also sometimes referred as Chennai Day.
