Table of Contents

The Mariana Trench is the deepest known oceanic trench on Earth and lies in the western North Pacific Ocean. It is located near the Mariana Islands and extends for about 2,540 km. Its deepest section is Challenger Deep. The trench formed where the Pacific Plate moves beneath the Mariana Plate, creating an extremely deep seafloor depression with unique life and environmental conditions.

Mariana Trench

The Mariana Trench is a crescent shaped depression in the western Pacific and forms part of a major oceanic trench system.

  • Mariana Trench Location: The Mariana Trench lies about 200 km east of the Mariana Islands and is situated within the territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean.
  • Size and Shape: The trench extends for about 2,550 km and has an average width of nearly 69 km. It forms an arcing, steep sided depression.
  • Mariana Trench Depth: The maximum known depth is 10,935 metres (10.935 km), making it the deepest point on Earth known in the oceans.
  • Challenger Deep: Challenger Deep is the deepest section of the Mariana Trench. It is a small, slot shaped valley located at the southern end of the main trench.
  • Formation: The trench developed through subduction, where the dense Pacific Plate moves beneath the smaller Mariana Plate. This process also contributes to volcanic activity and island formation.
  • Research History: The 1875 Challenger Expedition first recorded 8,184 metres. Later surveys by Vityaz, Takuyō, Kaikō and other missions produced increasingly accurate depth measurements.
  • Major Descents: Trieste reached Challenger Deep in 1960 with Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh. James Cameron made a solo descent in 2012 using Deepsea Challenger.
  • Legal Protection: The Mariana Trench Marine National Monument was established by the United States in 2009. Challenger Deep itself lies within the EEZ of the Federated States of Micronesia.
  • Mariana Trench Band: The trench belongs to the western Pacific band of oceanic trenches associated with subduction zones and volcanic island arcs.

Mariana Trench Environment

Life exists in the Mariana Trench despite extreme depth, immense pressure, low temperatures and increasing evidence of human made pollution.

  • Mariana Trench Animals: Researchers have recorded snailfish, jellyfish, amphipods, mollusks and other organisms. A snailfish was filmed at 8,178 metres, setting a record for deep sea fish observation.
  • Deep Sea Life: Monothalamea and xenophyophores have been found at extreme depths. Some xenophyophores exceed 10 cm and are among the largest known single cells.
  • Microbial Diversity: Research published in 2025 identified more than 7,000 microbial species in the trench. About 89% were reported as new to science.
  • Upper Environment: The Mariana forearc supports soft corals, sponges and tropical fish. These organisms differ greatly from life found on the much deeper trench floor.
  • Extreme Conditions: Bottom temperatures remain around 1-4°C. Water pressure can reach about 1,086 bar, or roughly 1,071.8 times standard atmospheric pressure.
  • Pollution: Research found elevated concentrations of PCBs in crustacean scavengers collected between 7,841 and 10,250 m. Amphipods have also been found ingesting microplastics.
  • Human Waste: Plastic bags and candy wrappers were reported from the trench in 2019. A beer bottle was later observed in the Western Pool in 2024.
  • Natural Sounds: A hydrophone deployed in Challenger Deep recorded earthquakes, typhoons and baleen whales, along with sounds produced by boats and other human activity.
