Mother Teresa Death Anniversary 2026 will be observed on 5 September 2026, marking the 29th anniversary of her death. The day is also observed as the International Day of Charity, designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 to promote charitable action and voluntary service.

Who Was Mother Teresa?

Mother Teresa was a Catholic nun and social worker who spent most of her life in India, especially in Kolkata, working with poor and vulnerable people. She became known for caring for people who were sick, homeless, abandoned or living in extreme poverty.

• She was born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on 26 August 1910 in Skopje, then part of the Ottoman Empire and now in North Macedonia, into an Albanian Catholic family.
• At the age of 18, she joined the Sisters of Loreto, a Catholic religious congregation that ran schools for girls.
• She came to India in 1929 and began teaching at a convent school in Calcutta.
• While continuing her work as a teacher and nun, she took her final religious vows in 1937 and adopted the name Teresa.

Mother Teresa Contribution

Mother Teresa later moved from teaching to directly working with Kolkata’s poorest people, which became the central focus of her life’s work.

• In 1948, she left the Loreto convent and began working directly in the poor neighbourhoods of Kolkata.
• She cared for people who were sick, dying, homeless or abandoned, particularly those who had little access to care and support.
• To organise this work on a larger scale, she founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata in 1950.
• In 1952, she established Nirmal Hriday, a home in Kolkata for terminally ill and destitute people, where they could receive care and die with dignity.
• From 1957, the Missionaries of Charity also ran mobile leprosy clinics and a Leprosy Fund to provide treatment and support to people affected by leprosy.
• The organisation began expanding outside India from 1965 and later established homes, schools, hospices and clinics in more than 100 countries.

Major Awards and Recognition

Mother Teresa received several important national and international awards for her humanitarian work.

• Padma Shri (1962): Awarded by the Government of India for her service to society.
• Nobel Peace Prize (1979): Awarded for her humanitarian work, particularly among the poor and suffering.
• Bharat Ratna (1980): India’s highest civilian award, recognising her contribution to humanitarian service.
• She also received several other international awards and honours during her lifetime.

Mother Teresa Death and Canonisation

Mother Teresa died in Kolkata on 5 September 1997, at the age of 87. After her death, the Catholic Church began the process of recognising her as a saint.

• In 1999, the Vatican began the official process of examining her life and work for sainthood.
• In 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified her, giving her the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. Beatification was the step that came before declaring her a saint.
• In 2016, Pope Francis declared her a saint and gave her the title Saint Teresa of Calcutta. This followed the Church’s recognition of two miracles associated with her.
• Her feast day is observed on 5 September, the same day as her death anniversary.
