About Sir M. Visvesvaraya

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (1861-1962) was a renowned civil engineer, administrator and statesman who played an important role in India’s infrastructure and industrial development. He began his career in the Bombay Public Works Department in 1884 and later served as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918, where he promoted industrialisation, technical education and economic development.

Sir M. Visvesvaraya Contributions 

His contributions covered water management, irrigation, flood control, industrialisation and economic development.

• He developed and patented automatic water-control floodgates, first installed at Khadakvasla Reservoir in 1903.
• He played a major role in the development of the Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam across the Cauvery River.
• After the 1908 Musi floods, he provided technical advice for improving flood protection in Hyderabad.
• As Diwan of Mysore, he promoted industries such as the Mysore Iron and Steel Works at Bhadravati and the Mysore Soap Factory.
• Through his writings, including Reconstructing India and Planned Economy for India, he advocated industrialisation, technical education and planned development.

In recognition of his contribution to nation-building, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955.
