Mount Girnar Religious Significance

Mount Girnar is sacred to Jainism and Hinduism and is known for its temples dedicated to Jain Tirthankaras and Hindu deities.

Mount Girnar Significance in Jainism

  • Mount Girnar is traditionally regarded as the nirvana bhumi of Lord Neminath, the 22nd Jain Tirthankara.
  • The Neminath Temple is the largest and oldest among the Jain temples on Girnar. It is attributed to Sajjana, a minister of Chaulukya ruler Siddharaja Jayasimha, and dates to the early 12th century.
  • The Mallinath Temple is dedicated to Mallinath, the 19th Jain Tirthankara. It forms part of the triple temple complex known as Vastupala Vihara, built by the ministers Vastupala and Tejapala around 1231–1232 CE.

These temples reflect the development of Jain religious architecture and pilgrimage traditions in medieval Gujarat.

Mount Girnar Significance in Hinduism

  • The Gorakhnath Temple is situated on the highest peak of the Girnar massif.
  • The Dattatreya Temple is dedicated to Lord Dattatreya, a deity traditionally associated with the combined aspects of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
  • The Kalika Temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali and is located on another peak of the mountain.

Mount Girnar Historical Significance

The foothills of Mount Girnar are historically significant because the Junagadh rock bears inscriptions issued by rulers from different periods of ancient Indian history.

Ashoka’s Rock Edicts

The Junagadh rock bears Ashoka’s Major Rock Edicts, which provide insights into Mauryan administration and the principles of Dhamma.

  • Dating to the third century BCE, the edicts are written in Prakrit using the Brahmi script.
  • They emphasise moral conduct, compassion and respect for different religious traditions.
  • They are an important source for understanding Ashoka’s policies and the spread of his ideas.

Junagadh Inscription of Rudradaman I

The inscription of Rudradaman I of the Western Kshatrapas is an important source for understanding the political and administrative history of western India.

  • Dating to approximately 150 CE, it is written in Sanskrit using the Brahmi script.
  • It is an important early example of extensive royal prose in Sanskrit.
  • It records the repair of the embankment of Sudarshana Lake after damage caused by heavy rains.

Skandagupta’s Inscription

The Junagadh inscription of Gupta emperor Skandagupta provides further evidence of irrigation management and public works in ancient India.

  • Dating to approximately 455-458 CE, it records repairs to the embankment of Sudarshana Lake.
  • It demonstrates the continued maintenance of irrigation infrastructure under successive ruling dynasties.

Sudarshana Lake and Ancient Water Management

Sudarshana Lake is historically connected to Mount Girnar because its construction and subsequent repairs are recorded in inscriptions on the Junagadh rock at the mountain’s foothills.

  • The lake was originally constructed during Chandragupta Maurya’s reign by his provincial governor, Pushyagupta.
  • During Ashoka’s reign, the Yavana official Tushaspa undertook additional works associated with the lake.
  • Rudradaman I repaired the lake’s embankment in the second century CE.
  • Further repairs were undertaken during the reign of Skandagupta in the fifth century CE.
  • These records provide evidence of irrigation, public works and administrative continuity under successive dynasties.
