Lal Baradari is a historic red-stone building in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, associated with the royal heritage of Awadh. Located within the University of Lucknow campus, it reflects the city’s Nawabi past and the transformation of historic royal spaces into modern institutions.
Lal Baradari History
Lal Baradari is a historic building in the University of Lucknow campus. It dates back to the Nawabi period of Awadh, when Lucknow was an important centre of royal power and culture.
- The building is believed to have been built during the reign of Nawab Ghazi-ud-Din Haider and his son, Naseeruddin Haider Shah, in the early nineteenth century.
- Historians believe it was used to accommodate visiting royal guests. Its large rooms and wall paintings reflect its historic architectural character.
- The building stood in Badshah Bagh, a historic area that existed before the University of Lucknow was established in 1921.
- The university began using the old building for institutional activities. Over the years, it housed a teachers’ association office, a bank, a cafeteria and a staff club.
Thus, Lal Baradari evolved from a building associated with Awadh’s royal past into a part of university life, preserving a visible link between Lucknow’s history and its modern educational institutions.
Lal Baradari Architecture
Lal Baradari is known for its red-stone construction and historic interiors, which contribute to Lucknow’s architectural heritage.
- Its distinctive red-stone appearance sets it apart among the city’s historic buildings.
- The building contains large rectangular rooms that once featured extensive paintings on their walls.
- A canal with fountains in front of the structure formed part of the surrounding landscape and recalled the area’s royal past.
Lal Baradari Historical Significance
Lal Baradari connects Lucknow’s royal history with the development of its modern urban and educational landscape.
- It represents the architectural legacy of the rulers of Awadh.
- Its later use by Lucknow University illustrates how historic buildings were adapted to meet modern needs.
- Its survival within the university campus preserves a link between the city’s historical landscape and its present-day institutions.
Lal Baradari Deterioration and Conservation
Lal Baradari has suffered structural deterioration, with widening cracks and weakened foundations raising concerns about its safety. The University of Lucknow shifted activities out of the building around 2017 due to the risk of collapse. It has since corresponded with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) regarding conservation.
The building recently drew attention after the university fenced it off, citing safety concerns. Some students protested, alleging that the move restricted access for prayers during Ramzan, while the university denied that a mosque existed on the premises.
