  • PM Modi addressed the session on “food and energy security” at the G-20 summit in Bali, Indonesia.

Key Highlights of the speech

  • Challenges faced by poor citizens of every country
    • The challenges for the poor citizens of every country are more severe due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the developments in Ukraine.
    • He called the crisis of essential goods and lack of financial capacity of the poor a “double whammy”.
  • Global supply chains are in ruins
    • PM Modi termed the current phase of climate change, the Covid pandemic, the developments in Ukraine, and the global problems associated with it as a “challenging global environment”.
    • He said that all these together have caused havoc in the world and global supply chains are in ruins.
  • Called for building mutual agreement to keep the supply chain stable
    • The current shortage of fertilizers in terms of food security is also a huge crisis.
    • Today’s fertilizer shortage is tomorrow’s food crisis, for which the world will not have a solution.
    • He asked the world leaders to build a mutual agreement to maintain the supply chain of both manure and food grains stable.
  • Regarding the reforms in the United Nations
    • PM Modi said that multilateral institutions such as the UN have been unsuccessful in tackling these issues. We have all failed to make suitable reforms in them.
  • Regarding the Ukraine conflict
    • Modi called for a way to return to the path of ceasefire and diplomacy in Ukraine.
    • He urged the world leaders to build a new world order to ensure peace and harmony.
  • Highlighted the food security measures adopted by India
    • PM Modi said that India ensured the food security of its 1.3 billion citizens during the time of the pandemic.
    • At the same time, food grains were also supplied to many countries in need.
    • For sustainable food security, India is promoting natural farming and re-popularizing nutritious and traditional food grains like millets.
    • Millets can also solve global malnutrition and hunger
    • He urged the world leaders to celebrate the International Year of Millets with great enthusiasm next year.
  • On the energy security front
    • PM Modi said that India’s energy security is also important for global growth, as it is the world’s fastest-growing economy.
    • He said that the world must not promote any restrictions on the supply of energy and stability in the energy market should be ensured.
      • This statement is significant as India continues to discounted Russian oil.
  • Highlighted India’s commitment to clean energy
    • By 2030, half of our electricity will be generated from renewable sources.
    • Time-bound and affordable finance and sustainable supply of technology to developing countries is essential for inclusive energy transition.

 

PM’s address to the Indian Diaspora

  • Highlighted cultural and civilizational linkages
    • PM Modi highlighted the close cultural and civilizational linkages between India and Indonesia.
    • He referred to the age-old tradition of “Bali Jatra” to highlight the enduring cultural and trade connect between the two countries.
    • He also referred to the celebration of Sankranti in Indonesia, and the statues of Lord Ganesh, often seen at public places in Indonesia.
  • India does not dream small anymore
    • The PM asserted that India thinks big and aims higher, adding that India now builds the biggest statues, the biggest stadiums.
    • Since 2014, India has opened more than 320 million bank accounts; more than the population of USA.
    • Today, India is the fastest growing large economy in the world.
    • He also listed out the areas in which India is world’s “number one” – smartphone data consumption, IT outsourcing and manufacture of certain drugs and vaccines.
  • India – ray of hope for the world
    • He said that India is moving ahead at an unprecedented speed and scale and the country is a ray of hope for the world in the 21st century.
    • He highlighted India’s growth story, its achievements and tremendous strides that India is making in various fields such as – digital technology, finance, health, telecom and space.
