• Establishment and Structure: The Defence Space Agency (DSA) is a tri-service agency of the Indian Armed Forces that focuses on the use of space capabilities for defence purposes. It was established in 2019 under the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and became operational in November 2019.
• Tri-Service Agency: The DSA brings together personnel and capabilities from the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. It is headquartered in Bengaluru and is responsible for coordinating and operating India’s military space assets.
• Space Situational Awareness: One of the major responsibilities of the DSA is to improve Space Situational Awareness (SSA). This involves monitoring and tracking satellites, space debris and other objects in space that could pose a risk to India’s space assets.
• Space-Based Intelligence: The agency works to improve the use of space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) for defence operations. Satellite-based communication, observation and navigation capabilities can provide the armed forces with better information and operational awareness.
• Counter-Space Capabilities: The DSA is also responsible for developing and operationalising counter-space capabilities. These capabilities are intended to protect India’s space assets and respond to potential threats or hostile actions against them.
• Coordination with ISRO: The agency works closely with ISRO and other defence organisations to make effective use of satellite technology, launch capabilities and other space-based systems for national defence requirements. Its role is distinct from the civilian and scientific functions of ISRO.

In October 2024, the Cabinet Committee on Security approved its third phase, involving 52 satellites for strengthening India’s space-based surveillance capabilities. Through initiatives such as the Mission DefSpace Challenge under Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX), the Ministry of Defence has supported private-sector companies working on space-related defence technologies.
