• Kanaklata Barua Death Anniversary is observed every year on 20 September to remember the young freedom fighter from Assam who sacrificed her life during the Quit India Movement in 1942.
• Kanaklata Barua was born on 22 December 1924 in Barangabari village, in present-day Sonitpur district of Assam. She belonged to a modest farming family and grew up during a period when the freedom movement was gaining strength across India.
• She became one of the youngest martyrs of India’s freedom struggle after being shot by British police at the age of 17 while leading an unarmed procession to hoist the Indian national flag at the Gohpur police station.
• Her courage and sacrifice made her an important figure in Assam’s history. She is remembered for her patriotism, courage and commitment to India’s freedom struggle, particularly for her role in the Quit India Movement.

Kanaklata Barua Early Life and Role in India’s Freedom Struggle

• Kanaklata Barua belonged to a humble farming family and faced several difficulties during her childhood. She lost her mother, Korneshwari Barua, when she was only five years old and later lost her father, Krishna Kanta Barua, during her teenage years.
• After becoming an orphan, Kanaklata had to take responsibility for her younger siblings. Because of her difficult family circumstances, she could not continue her education and left school after the third grade.
• Kanaklata grew up at a time when the nationalist movement was spreading across Assam. The influence of Gandhian ideas and the activities of local freedom fighters encouraged her to take an active interest in the struggle against British rule.
• She attended nationalist meetings and was inspired by the speeches of Bishnu Prasad Rabha and the patriotic songs of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala. These experiences strengthened her determination to participate in the freedom movement.
• Kanaklata later joined the Mrityu Bahini, a volunteer group associated with the Quit India Movement. Members of the group were prepared to face serious risks, including death, while participating in protests against British rule.

Kanaklata Barua and the Quit India Movement

• The Quit India Movement was launched in August 1942 after the All-India Congress Committee passed the Quit India Resolution on 8 August 1942. The movement demanded an immediate end to British rule in India.
• In Assam, freedom fighters organised peaceful protests and planned to hoist the Indian national flag at government offices and police stations. Kanaklata Barua became part of this movement and took part in one such procession at Gohpur.
• On 20 September 1942, Kanaklata Barua led a procession of unarmed volunteers towards the Gohpur police station to hoist the Tricolour. She carried the national flag at the front of the procession.
• The police warned the protesters to stop and return, but Kanaklata continued moving forward with the flag. The British police then opened fire on the unarmed procession, and Kanaklata was shot while carrying the Tricolour.
• Kanaklata Barua died on the spot at the age of 17. Another volunteer, Mukund Kakoti, was also shot dead after taking the flag forward following her death.
• Her sacrifice made her a lasting symbol of youthful courage and patriotism in Assam. She is popularly remembered as ‘Birbala’, meaning a brave woman, and her legacy continues through memorials, statues and other tributes dedicated to her.
