The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (TCFS) in Maharashtra has gained attention with the state government’s approval of a ₹45-crore Eco-Nature Park featuring India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered bird detection and monitoring centre. About Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary

The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary is a protected coastal wetland located along Thane Creek between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

• It was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 2015 under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, making it India’s first dedicated flamingo sanctuary.
• The sanctuary covers a unique intertidal ecosystem comprising mudflats, mangroves and shallow coastal waters, providing an ideal habitat for migratory and resident birds.
• It supports large populations of greater flamingos and lesser flamingos along with more than 200 species of birds, including herons, egrets, shorebirds and kingfishers.
• Due to its rich biodiversity and ecological importance, the sanctuary was designated as a Ramsar Site in 2022, recognising it as a wetland of international importance.

About Flamingos

Flamingos are iconic wetland birds known for their unique appearance, filter-feeding ability and dependence on shallow water ecosystems.

• They have long legs, an S-shaped neck and a curved beak adapted for feeding in shallow waters.
• They inhabit saline lakes, lagoons, mudflats and salt pans and are usually found in large colonies.
• Six species of flamingos are found globally, while India is home to Greater Flamingo and Lesser Flamingo.
• They feed on algae, small aquatic organisms, molluscs and crustaceans through filter feeding.
