World Radiography Day 2026 will be observed on 8 November 2026 to commemorate the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen in 1895. The day recognises the contribution of radiography professionals and highlights the importance of medical imaging in modern healthcare.
History of World Radiography Day
on 8 November 1895, German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen discovered X-rays while experimenting with cathode rays. He called them X-rays because their nature was initially unknown. This discovery transformed medical diagnosis by allowing doctors to examine internal body structures without surgery. In recognition of his contribution, Rontgen received the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
Significance of World Radiography Day
World Radiography Day recognises the vital role of radiographers and radiology professionals in modern healthcare. It raises awareness about the importance of medical imaging in the early detection, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of diseases. The day also promotes public understanding of radiation safety, encourages the adoption of advanced imaging technologies and highlights the need for skilled professionals and accessible diagnostic services in healthcare systems.
X-rays have several applications in medical diagnosis, particularly in examining bones, detecting abnormalities and supporting the diagnosis of various diseases.
- Detection of fractures: Identifies bone fractures, dislocations and other skeletal abnormalities.
- Chest examination: Helps diagnose pneumonia, tuberculosis and other lung abnormalities.
- Dental imaging: Detects cavities, tooth infections and abnormalities of the jaw.
- Cancer screening: Mammography uses low-dose X-rays to detect breast abnormalities and early signs of breast cancer.
- Joint examination: Helps identify certain joint disorders, bone infections and degenerative changes.
- Medical procedures: Assists in image-guided procedures such as catheter placement and positioning of medical devices.
Difference Between Radiography and Radiology
Although often used interchangeably, radiography and radiology have different meanings. Radiography focuses on producing medical images, whereas radiology is the medical speciality concerned with interpreting these images for diagnosis and treatment.
