Gir National Park, Location, History, Interesting Facts

Gir National Park in Gujarat is the only natural habitat of Asiatic lions. It boasts rich biodiversity and is a key wildlife conservation area in India.

Gir National Park

Gir National Park is the only place other than Africa where Asiatic Lions can be seen in their natural habitat in India. These lions can be seen around 2.75 meters in length, have distinctive features such as a larger tail tassel, bushier elbow tufts, and prominent belly folds compared to their African counterparts, which have larger manes. The Gir National Park is home to 40 mammal species and around 425 bird species. It remains the sole habitat for the Asiatic Lion, playing an important role in their conservation and protection.

Gir National Park History

Gir National Park was established in 1965, and designated as a National Park officially in 1975 with 259 sq.km. In the 19th century, the british rulers were invited by the rulers of the princely states for hunting activity which led to drastic decline in the population of Asiatic lions. Concerned about this decline, Britishers urged the Nawab of Junagadh to take action, leading to the establishment of the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary. Over the years, conservation efforts by the government forest department, wildlife activists, and NGOs have turned Gir into an important shelter for the Asiatic lion. Gir National Park remains the only place in Asia where Asiatic lions exist in the wild and is considered one of the most significant protected areas in Asia due to its rich biodiversity.

Gir National Park Flora

Gir National Park is home to a diverse range of plant species, including Jambu, Karanj, Umro, Vad, Kalam, Charal, Sirus, and Amli. These broad-leaved trees contribute to the ecosystem by offering shade and retaining moisture, creating a suitable habitat for wildlife. Other than this, as a part of conservation efforts, Prosopis and Casuarina have been planted along the Gir National Park coastal boundaries to support reforestation and ecological balance.

Gir National Park Fauna

The Asiatic lion  is a symbol of strength and intelligence, known for its social behavior and exceptional hunting skills. Gir National Park is also home to over 425 bird species, including various globally endangered ones such as the Greater Spotted Eagle (Aquila clanga), Dalmatian Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), Indian Skimmer (Rynchops albicollis), Oriental White-backed Vulture (Gyps bengalensis), and Long-Billed Vulture (Gyps indicus). The wetlands of Gir, particularly around Kamaleshwar Dam, support a diverse range of waterfowl. Six of India’s nine vulture species are found in Gir, though rare species like the White-rumped Vulture and Eurasian Griffon are now endangered.
