  2. As per the RTE Act, for teaching primary classes, a candidate is required to pass a Teacher Eligibility Test conducted in accordance with the National Council of Teacher Education guidelines.
  3. In India, more than 90% of teacher education institutions are directly under the State Governments.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

  1. 1. 1 and 2
  2. 2. 2 only
  3. 3. 1 and 3
  4. 4. 3 only

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 2: 2 only

Detailed Solution

Explanation:

  •  In accordance with the provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has laid down the minimum qualifications for a person to be eligible for appointment as a teacher in class I to VIII. So, Statement 1 is not correct.

  •  One of the essential qualifications for a person to be eligible for appointment as a teacher in any of the schools referred to in clause (n) of section 2 of the RTE Act is that he/she should pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) which will be conducted by the appropriate Government. So, Statement 2 is correct.

  •  From the mid-1960s to 1993, the number of TEIs in India went up from about 1,200 to about 1,500. After the NCTE was set up, the number of TEIs exploded, to about 16,000 (over 90% private) by 2011. So, Statement 3 is not correct.

Therefore, option (2) is the correct answer.
