Question

Who discovered Penicillin?

  1. 1. Theodore H. Maiman
  2. 2. Galileo Galilei
  3. 3. Alexander Fleming
  4. 4. Evangelista Torricelli

Answer (Detailed Solution Below)

Option 3: Alexander Fleming

Detailed Solution

Answer: (3) Alexander Fleming

Explanation:

Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin in 1928. It became the first commercialized antibiotic and transformed the treatment of bacterial infections. Penicillin marked the beginning of the antibiotic era and significantly reduced deaths caused by infectious diseases.

Today, the growing challenge of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is reducing the effectiveness of antibiotics. AMR develops when bacteria and other microbes no longer respond to medicines because of factors such as unnecessary antibiotic use, mutations, selective pressure, and excessive use in hospitals and agriculture. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also highlighted antibiotic pollution from manufacturing as an important concern in controlling antimicrobial resistance.

India launched the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (NAP-AMR) in 2017. The plan focuses on awareness, surveillance, infection prevention, responsible antimicrobial use, research and innovation, and stronger leadership. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) coordinates its implementation. India has also introduced the Red Line Campaign, which advises people not to use medicines marked with a red vertical line without a doctor's prescription to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and drug resistance.
