Mirabai, born around 1498 in the village of Kudki, Merta, was a remarkable saint-poetess and devotee of Lord Krishna whose life and works have left a lasting impact on the Bhakti Movement. As the daughter of Rana Rattan Singh Rathor and great-granddaughter of Rao Jodhaji, the founder of Jodhpur, Mirabai was married to Bhoj Raj, the eldest son of Rana Sanga, but was widowed at a young age. 

Heartbroken by personal losses, Mirabai devoted herself to a life of deep spiritual devotion and ecstatic mysticism, composing soulful bhajans expressing her unwavering love for Krishna. Known for her passionate surrender and divine love, Mirabai’s legacy continues through her poetic “Padavali,” inspiring generations with her message of devotion beyond worldly ties.

Mirabai Early Life

Mirabai, born to Rana Rattan Singh Rathor of Merta, was the great-granddaughter of Rao Jodhaji, the illustrious founder of Jodhpur.

• Mirabai was born in Kudki village in the Merta region around 1498 CE. She belonged to the Rathore aristocracy and later married Bhoj Raj, the eldest son of Rana Sanga.
• Bhoj Raj died only a few years after their marriage, leaving Mirabai a widow at a young age. Following this, she increasingly devoted herself to Krishna Bhakti and a life of spiritual devotion.
• Mirabai's devotional poetry is traditionally associated with Guru Ravidas, although the historical evidence for their direct teacher–disciple relationship remains debated. Her padas and bhajans express intense devotion, divine love, and surrender to Krishna.
• The exact circumstances and date of Mirabai's death are uncertain. Later traditions place her final years in Dwarka and describe her disappearance as a miraculous union with Krishna, often dated to around 1546 CE. This account should be presented as a devotional tradition rather than an established historical fact.

Mirabai and the Bhakti Movement

Mirabai was a prominent Bhakti movement saint-poet known for her intense devotion to Lord Krishna. Her poetry emphasised personal devotion, divine love and surrender, making her an important voice of the Saguna Bhakti tradition.

• Krishna Bhakti: Mirabai regarded Krishna as Giridhar Gopal and expressed a deeply personal relationship with him through her devotional songs.
• Premabhakti: Her poetry reflects Premabhakti, where intense personal love and devotion become the principal means of approaching the divine.
• Personal Devotion: Her compositions emphasised a direct relationship with the divine rather than dependence on worldly status or material wealth.
• Vernacular Poetry: Through her padas and bhajans, Mirabai expressed complex spiritual ideas in accessible poetic forms, contributing to the wider spread of Bhakti traditions.
• Devotional Surrender: Her poetry repeatedly expresses love, surrender, and spiritual longing, presenting devotion as a deeply personal experience.
• Social Dimension: Her devotional life challenged conventional expectations associated with her position as a royal woman and placed personal faith above worldly privileges.
• Literary Legacy: Her compositions became an enduring part of Krishna Bhakti literature and continue to be sung across Rajasthan, Gujarat, and North India.

Mirabai and Guru Ravidas

Many scholars argue that Mirabai followed Saguna Bhakti, worshipping Lord Krishna as an incarnation of Vishnu, and therefore couldn’t have been a disciple of Ravidas, who advocated Nirguna Bhakti, devotion to the formless divine.

• In this context, it can be said that while Saguna Bhakti typically focuses on Vishnu’s incarnations, its followers do not reject the Nirguna, formless aspect of God.
• Another possibility is that Mirabai was already a devotee of Lord Krishna before encountering Guru Ravidas. Therefore, the possibility of a meeting between Mirabai and Guru Ravidas cannot be ruled out. 
• After the death of her father, Mirabai’s devotion and ecstatic mysticism brought her insurmountable misery and suffering. 
• Mirabai abandoned her home to live as an ascetic. During that time, she is believed to have travelled to Kashi and other sacred sites.
• Mirabai may have become a disciple of Guru Ravidas during her visit to Kashi in late 1527.

Mirabai Major Works

Mirabai composed a large number of songs dedicated to Lord Krishna, though scholars are divided as to how many were her own compositions. The significant fact is that her songs were the spontaneous outpourings of her ‘bhakti’. 

• Mirabai’s poetical works are conventionally referred to as her “Padavali”. The word Padavali means a series of padas. 
  • The pada, in its more mature form, was a short song conveying instruction on the spiritual life, usually rhyming and composed in simple rhythms, adaptable for singing.
